The early churchDisciple1st century AD

Joseph Barsabbas, also called Justus, was one of two candidates proposed to replace Judas Iscariot as an apostle. He had been with Jesus throughout his entire ministry, from baptism to ascension, but the lot fell on Matthias. He represents the faithful disciples who followed Jesus without being named among the Twelve.

Nominated as an apostle candidate

Joseph Barsabbas, along with Matthias, was proposed as a candidate to replace Judas Iscariot among the twelve apostles. He met the requirement of having been with Jesus from his baptism until his ascension.

21So then, from among the men who accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us —
22beginning with John's baptism until the day when he was taken up from us — one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection."
23So they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabbas, also known as Justus, and Matthias.

The Lot Falls on Matthias

After prayer, the community cast lots between Joseph and Matthias. The lot fell on Matthias, who was counted among the twelve apostles, while Joseph continued as a faithful disciple.

24Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen
25to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas abandoned to go where he belongs."
26Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

Witness to Jesus' Resurrection

As a qualified candidate, Joseph had witnessed Jesus' resurrection and could testify about this together with the apostles.

22beginning with John's baptism until the day when he was taken up from us — one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection."
