Rekem

Midianite King Killed by Israel

The conquestKingc. 1400 BC

Rekem was one of the five kings of Midian who were killed by the Israelites at the Lord's command through Moses. He is also mentioned as a descendant of Caleb in the tribe of Judah in 1 Chronicles, but he is best known as one of the Midianite kings who fell in the war against Israel. The city of Rekem in the territory of the tribe of Benjamin may have been named after him or a namesake.

The War Against Midian

The Lord commanded Moses to wage war against the Midianites, who had led Israel into sin at Peor. Israel sent a thousand men from each tribe to fight.

1The LORD said to Moses,
2"Take vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites. After that you will be gathered to your people."
3So Moses said to the people, "Arm some of your men for war, so they can go against Midian and carry out the LORD's vengeance on Midian.
4Send a thousand men to war from each of the tribes of Israel."
5So from the clans of Israel a thousand were enlisted from each tribe—twelve thousand men armed for war.
6Moses sent them out to war, a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, who took with him the holy vessels and the trumpets for sounding the alarm.

The Five Midianite Kings Are Killed

Rekem was killed along with the other four Midianite kings—Evi, Zur, Hur, and Reba—in Israel's war against Midian.

8Among the slain were the kings of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—the five kings of Midian. They also put Balaam son of Beor to the sword.

Balaam is killed in the same war

In addition to the five kings, the prophet Balaam son of Beor was also put to death by the sword in this war against Midian.

8Among the slain were the kings of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—the five kings of Midian. They also put Balaam son of Beor to the sword.

Moses recalls the victory over the Midianites

Joshua mentions the victory over the five Midianite kings, including Rekem, as one of God's great deeds for Israel.

21all the towns of the plateau and the entire kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon. Moses had defeated him and the chiefs of Midian—Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—princes allied with Sihon who lived in that land.

Rekem as a descendant of Caleb

In Judah's genealogy, another Rekem is mentioned as the son of Hebron and father of Shammai, in the line of Caleb.

43The sons of Hebron: Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema.
44Shema fathered Raham, the father of Jorkeam, and Rekem fathered Shammai.
