Home People Salome (Jesus' aunt?, Wife of Zebedee) Salome was the wife of the fisherman Zebedee and mother of the apostles James and John. She was one of the women who followed Jesus and served him throughout his earthly ministry, and she was present both at the crucifixion and at the empty tomb on Easter morning.

Key events Salome came to Jesus with her sons and asked that they be allowed to sit at his right and left hand in his kingdom. Jesus responded by teaching about the spirit of service.
20 Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to him with her sons, and kneeling down, she asked a favor of him. Gk Τότε προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ ἡ μήτηρ τῶν υἱῶν Ζεβεδαίου μετὰ τῶν υἱῶν αὐτῆς προσκυνοῦσα καὶ αἰτοῦσά τι ⸀παρʼ αὐτοῦ.
21 "What do you want?" he asked. She said to him, "Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right and one at your left, in your kingdom." Gk ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ· Τί θέλεις; λέγει αὐτῷ· Εἰπὲ ἵνα καθίσωσιν οὗτοι οἱ δύο υἱοί μου εἷς ἐκ δεξιῶν ⸀σου καὶ εἷς ἐξ εὐωνύμων σου ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου.
22 Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am about to drink?" "We can," they said. Gk ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Οὐκ οἴδατε τί αἰτεῖσθε· δύνασθε πιεῖν τὸ ποτήριον ὃ ἐγὼ μέλλω ⸀πίνειν; λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· Δυνάμεθα.
23 He said to them, "You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right and at my left is not mine to grant. Those places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father." Gk ⸀λέγει αὐτοῖς· Τὸ μὲν ποτήριόν μου ⸀πίεσθε, τὸ δὲ καθίσαι ἐκ δεξιῶν μου καὶ ἐξ ⸀εὐωνύμων οὐκ ἔστιν ⸀ἐμὸν δοῦναι, ἀλλʼ οἷς ἡτοίμασται ὑπὸ τοῦ πατρός μου.
Salome was among the women who followed Jesus from Galilee and served him with what they had.
40 There were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. Gk Ἦσαν δὲ καὶ γυναῖκες ἀπὸ μακρόθεν θεωροῦσαι, ἐν ⸀αἷς καὶ ⸀Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία ⸀ἡ Ἰακώβου τοῦ μικροῦ καὶ ⸀Ἰωσῆτος μήτηρ καὶ Σαλώμη,
41 These women had followed him and cared for his needs while he was in Galilee, and many other women had come up with him to Jerusalem. Gk ⸀αἳ ὅτε ἦν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ ἠκολούθουν αὐτῷ καὶ διηκόνουν αὐτῷ, καὶ ἄλλαι πολλαὶ αἱ συναναβᾶσαι αὐτῷ εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα.
Salome stood with other women and watched as Jesus was crucified at Golgotha. She remained faithful even in this dark hour.
40 There were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. Gk Ἦσαν δὲ καὶ γυναῖκες ἀπὸ μακρόθεν θεωροῦσαι, ἐν ⸀αἷς καὶ ⸀Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία ⸀ἡ Ἰακώβου τοῦ μικροῦ καὶ ⸀Ἰωσῆτος μήτηρ καὶ Σαλώμη,
Early in the morning on the first day of the week, Salome came with Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James, to the tomb with fragrant oils to anoint Jesus' body.
1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so they could go and anoint him. Gk Καὶ διαγενομένου τοῦ σαββάτου ⸀Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία ⸂ἡ τοῦ⸃ Ἰακώβου καὶ Σαλώμη ἠγόρασαν ἀρώματα ἵνα ἐλθοῦσαι ἀλείψωσιν αὐτόν.
2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they came to the tomb. Gk καὶ λίαν πρωῒ ⸂τῇ μιᾷ τῶν⸃ σαββάτων ἔρχονται ἐπὶ τὸ μνημεῖον ἀνατείλαντος τοῦ ἡλίου.
