Shua was a Canaanite man who was the father of Judah's wife. Through his daughter, he became the father-in-law of Judah, Jacob's son. He is mentioned in connection with Judah's marriage and family history in Genesis.

Judah's Marriage to Shua's Daughter

Judah saw the daughter of the Canaanite man Shua and took her as his wife. This marriage took place when Judah had left his brothers and settled near a man in Adullam.

1About that time Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man from Adullam named Hirah.

2There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite named Shua. He took her and slept with her,

וַיַּרְא־שָׁ֧ם יְהוּדָ֛ה בַּת־אִ֥ישׁ כְּנַעֲנִ֖י וּשְׁמ֣וֹ שׁ֑וּעַ וַיִּקָּחֶ֖הָ וַיָּבֹ֥א אֵלֶֽיהָ׃ ‬

The Birth of Er

Shua's daughter bore Judah a son who was named Er. He was Judah's firstborn son.

3and she conceived and bore a son, and he named him Er.

וַתַּ֖הַר וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ עֵֽר׃ ‬

The Birth of Onan

Shua's daughter then bore another son to Judah, who was named Onan.

4She conceived again and bore a son, and she named him Onan.

The Birth of Shelah

Shua's daughter bore yet another son, Shelah, while Judah was in Kezib.

5Then she bore still another son and named him Shelah. Judah was at Chezib when she gave birth to him.

וַתֹּ֤סֶף עוֹד֙ וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֔ן וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ שֵׁלָ֑ה וְהָיָ֥ה בִכְזִ֖יב בְּלִדְתָּ֥הּ אֹתֽוֹ׃ ‬

Death of Shua's Daughter

Shua's daughter, Judah's wife, died after a time. After the period of mourning, Judah went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah.

12After a long time Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had finished mourning, he went up to Timnah to the men shearing his sheep, together with his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

וַיִּרְבּוּ֙ הַיָּמִ֔ים וַתָּ֖מָת בַּת־שׁ֣וּעַ אֵֽשֶׁת־יְהוּדָ֑ה וַיִּנָּ֣חֶם יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיַּ֜עַל עַל־גֹּֽזֲזֵ֤י צֹאנוֹ֙ ה֗וּא וְחִירָ֛ה רֵעֵ֥הוּ הָעֲדֻלָּמִ֖י תִּמְנָֽתָה׃ ‬

3The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, and Shelah. These three were born to him by Bath-shua the Canaanite. Er, Judah's firstborn, was evil in the LORD's sight, and the LORD put him to death.
