So I appeal to the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ's sufferings, and one who also shares in the glory that is about to be revealed:

shepherd the flock of God that is among you, watching over it not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have it; not for shameful gain but eagerly;

not lording it over those entrusted to your care, but being examples to the flock.

And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

In the same way, you who are younger, submit to the elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

Humble yourselves, then, under God's mighty hand, so that he may lift you up in due time,

casting all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.

Be sober; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

Resist him, firm in the faith, knowing that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of suffering.

And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore you, support you, strengthen you, and establish you.

To him be the power forever and ever. Amen.

With the help of Silvanus, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.

She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son.

People

Silvanus (Silas) is mentioned in verse 12 as the letter's bearer or possibly its secretary (διὰ Σιλουανοῦ). This is likely the same person who was Paul's coworker on his second missionary journey (Acts 15:40; 17:14-15) and who is named in several of Paul's letters. His Latin name (Silvanus) and Greek/Aramaic name (Silas, possibly from Hebrew שְׁאִילָא) suggest a Jewish-Christian with Roman citizenship, which Acts confirms (Acts 16:37). As a trusted messenger between the apostles and the congregations, he played an important role in the early church's communication network.

Mark is referred to in verse 13 as "my son" (ὁ υἱός μου), indicating a spiritual father-son relationship. This is probably John Mark, Barnabas's nephew (Col 4:10), who according to early tradition (Papias, early 2nd century, cited by Eusebius) later recorded Peter's preaching in the Gospel of Mark. His presence with Peter in "Babylon" confirms the close connection between these two, which the church father Eusebius also documents.

Places

Babylon (verse 13) is a debated place name. Peter's description of "the unfading crown of glory" (ἀμαράντινον) – derived from the amaranth plant (ἀμάραντος, "unfading"), known for retaining its color – creates a deliberate contrast to the perishable honors in the Greco-Roman world.

Key Terms

Κλῆρος (kleros, verse 3) is often translated as "those entrusted to you" or "the congregation". The word originally means "lot" or "inheritance lot" and here refers to believers as God's allotted inheritance given to the leaders. This language draws from the Old Testament where Israel was God's "inheritance" (Deut 9:29). Interestingly, this word is the origin of our modern term "clerical/clergy", although here it describes the congregation, not the leaders.

Ἐγκομβόομαι (egkomboomai, verse 5) is a rare verb meaning "to bind on oneself" and refers to the slave's work garment (enkomboma), an apron that was tied fast. The image recalls Jesus tying a towel around himself before washing the disciples' feet (John 13:4). Peter thus calls for concrete, visible humility characteristic of the servant role – a radical message in an honor-shame culture where social status was decisive.
