Hezekiah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah.

He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his forefather David had done.

In the first month of the first year of his reign he opened the doors of the house of the LORD and repaired them.

He brought in the priests and the Levites and gathered them in the square on the east side,

and he said to them: "Listen to me, Levites! Consecrate yourselves now, and consecrate the house of the LORD, the God of your fathers. Carry the filth out of the sanctuary.

For our fathers were unfaithful; they did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD our God and abandoned him. They turned their faces away from the dwelling place of the LORD and turned their backs on him.

They even shut the doors of the portico and put out the lamps. They burned no incense and offered no burnt offerings in the sanctuary to the God of Israel.

So the wrath of the LORD fell on Judah and Jerusalem, and he made them an object of horror, of dismay, and of scorn, as you see with your own eyes.

This is why our fathers have fallen by the sword and our sons and daughters and wives are in captivity.

Now I intend to make a covenant with the LORD, the God of Israel, so that his burning anger may turn away from us.

My sons, do not be negligent now, for the LORD has chosen you to stand before him and serve him, to be his ministers and to burn incense."

Then these Levites stepped forward: Mahath son of Amasai and Joel son of Azariah from the Kohathites; from the Merarites, Kish son of Abdi and Azariah son of Jehallelel; from the Gershonites, Joah son of Zimmah and Eden son of Joah;

from the sons of Elizaphan, Shimri and Jeiel; from the sons of Asaph, Zechariah and Mattaniah;

from the sons of Heman, Jehiel and Shimei; and from the sons of Jeduthun, Shemaiah and Uzziel.

They gathered their brothers and consecrated themselves, and then they went in to purify the house of the LORD, as the king had commanded according to the words of the LORD.

The priests went into the inner part of the house of the LORD to purify it. Everything unclean that they found in the temple of the LORD they brought out to the courtyard of the house of the LORD, and the Levites took it and carried it out to the Kidron Valley.

They began the consecration on the first day of the first month, and on the eighth day of the month they came to the portico of the LORD. For eight more days they consecrated the house of the LORD, and on the sixteenth day of the first month they finished.

Then they went in to King Hezekiah and reported: "We have purified the entire house of the LORD, the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the table for the rows of bread with all its utensils.

We have also prepared and consecrated all the articles that King Ahaz cast aside in his unfaithfulness during his reign. They are now in front of the altar of the LORD."

Early the next morning King Hezekiah gathered the officials of the city and went up to the house of the LORD.

They brought seven bulls, seven rams, seven lambs, and seven male goats as a sin offering for the kingdom, for the sanctuary, and for Judah. And the king ordered the priests, the descendants of Aaron, to offer them on the altar of the LORD.

So they slaughtered the bulls, and the priests took the blood and sprinkled it against the altar. Then they slaughtered the rams and sprinkled the blood against the altar, and they slaughtered the lambs and sprinkled the blood against the altar.

The goats for the sin offering were brought before the king and the assembly, and they laid their hands on them.

The priests slaughtered them and presented their blood on the altar as a sin offering, to make atonement for all Israel; for the king had ordered the burnt offering and the sin offering for all Israel.

He stationed the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, harps, and lyres, according to the command of David, of Gad the king's seer, and of Nathan the prophet; for this command came from the LORD through his prophets.

So the Levites stood ready with David's instruments, and the priests with their trumpets.

Then Hezekiah gave the order to offer the burnt offering on the altar. As the offering began, the song to the LORD began as well, with the trumpets and the instruments of David king of Israel.

The whole assembly bowed in worship while the singers sang and the trumpeters sounded their trumpets. All this continued until the burnt offering was finished.

When the offering was completed, the king and everyone with him knelt down and worshiped.

King Hezekiah and the officials ordered the Levites to praise the LORD with the words of David and of Asaph the seer. So they sang praises with gladness and bowed their heads and worshiped.

Then Hezekiah said, "Now that you have consecrated yourselves to the LORD, come forward and bring sacrifices and thank offerings to the house of the LORD." So the assembly brought sacrifices and thank offerings, and all whose hearts were willing brought burnt offerings.

The number of burnt offerings the assembly brought was seventy bulls, a hundred rams, and two hundred lambs—all of them as a burnt offering to the LORD.

The animals consecrated as sacrifices amounted to six hundred bulls and three thousand sheep and goats.

But the priests were too few to skin all the burnt offerings, so their brothers the Levites helped them until the work was finished and until the priests had consecrated themselves; for the Levites had been more conscientious in consecrating themselves than the priests.

There were also many burnt offerings, along with the fat of the fellowship offerings and the drink offerings that accompanied the burnt offerings. So the service of the house of the LORD was reestablished.

Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced over what God had done for the people, for it had all come about so suddenly.

People

Hezekiah (יְחִזְקִיָּהוּ) was the son of King Ahaz and began to reign at the age of twenty-five. His mother Abijah (אֲבִיָּה) was the daughter of Zechariah. In this chapter, Hezekiah appears as a reformer who acts according to David’s example (verse 2), and he takes the initiative to cleanse and reopen the temple already in his first month of reign.

The chapter mentions fourteen Levites by name who led the cleansing work (verses 12–14), organized according to the traditional Levitical families: the Kohathites (Mahath and Joel), the Merarites (Kish and Azariah), the Gershonites (Joah and Eden), as well as descendants of Elizaphan (Shimri and Jeiel), Asaph (Zechariah and Mattaniah), Heman (Jehiel and Shimei), and Jeduthun (Shemaiah and Uzziel). The prophets Gad (David’s seer) and Nathan are mentioned as the source of the arrangements for temple music (verse 25).

On the eighth day, they reached the porch (אוּלָם), and by the sixteenth day the entire cleansing was completed (verse 17). This timing meant that the temple was ready just before Passover season, although it became too late to celebrate Passover that month (compare chapter 30).

The sin offering of seven male goats "for the kingdom, for the sanctuary, and for Judah" (verse 21) represented a special act of atonement. The people laying their hands on the sin offering animals (verse 23) was a symbolic transfer of sin to the sacrificial animal, in accordance with the instructions in Leviticus 4. The expression "for all Israel" (verse 24) shows Hezekiah’s vision that the tribes of the northern kingdom should also be included in the atonement.

The scale of the offerings was considerable: seventy bulls, one hundred rams, and two hundred lambs as burnt offerings, along with six hundred bulls and three thousand sheep as holy gifts (verses 32–33). There were too few priests to skin all the burnt offerings, so the Levites had to help them (verse 34).

Key Terms

The expression "to fill the hands" (מִלֵּאתֶם יֶדְכֶם, verse 31) is an idiom for consecration to service, originally used concerning priestly ordination. Here it is extended to apply to all the people who have now renewed their covenant with the Lord.
