As the representative for the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli was chosen to take part in the fateful spying mission when Moses sent twelve men from the wilderness of Paran to scout out the land of Canaan. Through forty days of reconnaissance—from the wilderness of Zin in the south to Rehob near Lebo-Hamath in the north—the spies gained a complete picture of both the richness and the challenges of the promised land. Despite the land’s fertility and abundance, Ammiel was overwhelmed by fear of Canaan’s powerful inhabitants and fortified cities. Along with nine other spies, he spread discouragement throughout all Israel’s assembly by claiming that the people there were too strong to overcome. This report triggered a serious crisis of faith that erupted into open rebellion against Moses and Aaron, with the people even wanting to return to Egypt. God’s judgment on the ten unfaithful spies was immediate and final: they died from a plague before the Lord. Only Joshua and Caleb, who had held fast to their faith in God’s power and promises, were spared and eventually allowed to enter the promised land. Ammiel’s story is a powerful reminder of how fear and unbelief can undermine God’s people in their calling and hinder the fulfillment of His promises.
Ammiel, son of Gemalli, was chosen as the representative from the tribe of Dan to be one of the twelve scouts sent by Moses to explore the land of Canaan.
20Is the soil rich or poor? Are there trees on it or not? Be bold, and bring back some of the fruit of the land." It was the season of the first ripe grapes.
The scouts, including Ammiel, spent forty days exploring the land of Canaan from the wilderness of Zin in the south to Rehob near Lebo-Hamath in the north.
22They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
23When they reached the Valley of Eshcol, they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes, and two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates and figs.
Ammiel was among the ten scouts who gave a negative report about the land, claiming that its people were too strong to be defeated, which caused fear and discouragement among the Israelites.
29The Amalekites live in the land of the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live by the sea and along the Jordan."
32And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had scouted: "The land we traveled through to explore it devours those who live in it, and all the people we saw there are of enormous size.
33We even saw the Nephilim there—the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim. In our own eyes we seemed like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.
2All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, "If only we had died in Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness!
3Why is the LORD bringing us to this land, only to fall by the sword? Our wives and children will become plunder. Wouldn't it be better for us to go back to Egypt?"
Ammiel and the other nine scouts who had spread fear among the people were struck down by a plague and died before the Lord as punishment for their unbelief.
