In the twenty-third year of Joash son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz son of Jehu became king over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned seventeen years.
He did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD and followed the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had led Israel into sin; he never turned away from them.
So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and he handed them over to Hazael king of Aram and to Ben-hadad son of Hazael throughout those days.
Then Jehoahaz pleaded with the LORD, and the LORD listened to him, for he saw how Israel was oppressed—how the king of Aram was crushing them.
The LORD gave Israel a deliverer, and they escaped from the grip of Aram, so that the Israelites lived in their own homes as they had before.
But they did not turn away from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, who had led Israel into sin; they kept walking in them. And the Asherah pole also remained standing in Samaria.
Nothing was left of Jehoahaz's army but fifty horsemen, ten chariots, and ten thousand foot soldiers, for the king of Aram had destroyed them and made them like the dust at threshing.
The rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, all that he did and his mighty deeds, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel?
Jehoahaz slept with his fathers and was buried in Samaria, and his son Joash became king in his place.
In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, Jehoash son of Jehoahaz became king over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned sixteen years.
He did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD. He did not turn away from any of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had led Israel into sin, but kept walking in them.
The rest of the acts of Joash, all that he did, and his valor in his war against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel?
Joash slept with his fathers, and Jeroboam took his place on the throne. Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.
Now Elisha had fallen sick with the illness from which he would die. Joash king of Israel went down to him and wept over him, saying, "My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!"
Elisha said to him, "Take a bow and arrows," and he took a bow and arrows.
Then he said to the king of Israel, "Set your hand to the bow." When he had set his hand to it, Elisha laid his own hands on the king's hands.
"Open the window toward the east," he said, and the king opened it. Then Elisha said, "Shoot!" and he shot. And Elisha said, "The LORD's arrow of victory, the arrow of victory over Aram! You will strike down Aram at Aphek until you have finished them off."
Then he said, "Take the arrows," and he took them. He said to the king of Israel, "Strike the ground," and he struck it three times and stopped.
The man of God was angry with him and said, "You should have struck five or six times—then you would have struck Aram down until you had finished them off. But now you will defeat Aram only three times."
Then Elisha died and was buried. Now Moabite raiders used to invade the land each spring.
Once, while some men were burying a man, they suddenly caught sight of a raiding party. They threw the man into Elisha's grave, and as soon as he touched Elisha's bones, the man came to life and rose to his feet.
Hazael king of Aram oppressed Israel throughout the days of Jehoahaz.
But the LORD was gracious to them, had compassion on them, and turned toward them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He was unwilling to destroy them, and he did not cast them out from his presence—not to this day.
When Hazael king of Aram died, his son Ben-hadad became king in his place.
Then Jehoash son of Jehoahaz took back from Ben-hadad son of Hazael the towns Ben-hadad had captured in battle from his father Jehoahaz. Three times Joash defeated him, and so he recovered the towns of Israel.
