Ancestor of the Gershonites
Gershon was the firstborn son of Levi, one of Jacob's twelve sons. He became the ancestor of the Gershonites, one of the three main branches of the Levites who were given special duties in the service of the tabernacle and later the temple.

Counting of the Gershonites
The Gershonites, descendants of Gershon, were counted and registered in the wilderness under Moses' leadership.
21To Gershon belonged the clan of the Libnites and the clan of the Shimeites; these are the Gershonite clans.
לְגֵ֣רְשׁ֔וֹן מִשְׁפַּ֙חַת֙ הַלִּבְנִ֔י וּמִשְׁפַּ֖חַת הַשִּׁמְעִ֑י אֵ֣לֶּה הֵ֔ם מִשְׁפְּחֹ֖ת הַגֵּרְשֻׁנִּֽי׃
22Their enrollment, counting every male a month old and older, came to 7,500.
פְּקֻדֵיהֶם֙ בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר כָּל־זָכָ֔ר מִבֶּן־חֹ֖דֶשׁ וָמָ֑עְלָה פְּקֻ֣דֵיהֶ֔ם שִׁבְעַ֥ת אֲלָפִ֖ים וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃
23The Gershonite clans were to camp behind the tabernacle, on the west.

Service at the tabernacle
The Gershonites were given responsibility for carrying and caring for the curtains, coverings, and screen of the tabernacle.
24This is the service of the Gershonite clans, their duties and their loads:
זֹ֣את עֲבֹדַ֔ת מִשְׁפְּחֹ֖ת הַגֵּרְשֻׁנִּ֑י לַעֲבֹ֖ד וּלְמַשָּֽׂא׃
25They shall carry the curtains of the tabernacle, the tent of meeting with its covering and the covering of fine leather that goes over it, the screen for the entrance to the tent of meeting,
וְנָ֨שְׂא֜וּ אֶת־יְרִיעֹ֤ת הַמִּשְׁכָּן֙ וְאֶת־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד מִכְסֵ֕הוּ וּמִכְסֵ֛ה הַתַּ֥חַשׁ אֲשֶׁר־עָלָ֖יו מִלְמָ֑עְלָה וְאֶ֨ת־מָסַ֔ךְ פֶּ֖תַח אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵֽד׃
26the hangings of the courtyard, the screen for the entrance at the gate of the courtyard surrounding the tabernacle and the altar, their ropes, and all the equipment for their service. They shall do everything that needs to be done with these things.
וְאֵת֩ קַלְעֵ֨י הֶֽחָצֵ֜ר וְאֶת־מָסַ֣ךְ ׀ פֶּ֣תַח ׀ שַׁ֣עַר הֶחָצֵ֗ר אֲשֶׁ֨ר עַל־הַמִּשְׁכָּ֤ן וְעַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ סָבִ֔יב וְאֵת֙ מֵֽיתְרֵיהֶ֔ם וְאֶֽת־כָּל־כְּלֵ֖י עֲבֹדָתָ֑ם וְאֵ֨ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֧ר יֵעָשֶׂ֛ה לָהֶ֖ם וְעָבָֽדוּ׃
Levitical cities
The Gershonites were allotted thirteen cities in the promised land as part of the Levites' inheritance.
27To the Gershonites, one of the Levite clans, they gave from the half-tribe of Manasseh: Golan in Bashan, a city of refuge for anyone accused of murder, with its pastureland, and Be Eshterah with its pastureland—two cities.
וְלִבְנֵ֣י גֵרְשׁוֹן֮ מִמִּשְׁפְּחֹ֣ת הַלְוִיִּם֒ מֵחֲצִ֞י מַטֵּ֣ה מְנַשֶּׁ֗ה אֶת־עִיר֙ מִקְלַ֣ט הָרֹצֵ֔חַ אֶת־*גלון **גּוֹלָ֤ן בַּבָּשָׁן֙ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶֽת־בְּעֶשְׁתְּרָ֖ה וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים שְׁתָּֽיִם׃ ס
28From the tribe of Issachar: Kishion with its pastureland, Daberath with its pastureland,
וּמִמַּטֵּ֣ה יִשָׂשכָ֔ר אֶת־קִשְׁי֖וֹן וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ אֶת־דָּֽבְרַ֖ת וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃
29Jarmuth with its pastureland, and En Gannim with its pastureland—four cities.
אֶת־יַרְמוּת֙ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ אֶת־עֵ֥ין גַּנִּ֖ים וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃ ס
30From the tribe of Asher: Mishal with its pastureland, Abdon with its pastureland,
וּמִמַּטֵּ֣ה אָשֵׁ֔ר אֶת־מִשְׁאָ֖ל וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ אֶת־עַבְדּ֖וֹן וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃
31Helkath with its pastureland, and Rehob with its pastureland—four cities.
אֶת־חֶלְקָת֙ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־רְחֹ֖ב וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃ ס
32From the tribe of Naphtali: Kedesh in Galilee, a city of refuge for anyone accused of murder, with its pastureland, Hammoth Dor with its pastureland, and Kartan with its pastureland—three cities.
וּמִמַּטֵּ֨ה נַפְתָּלִ֜י אֶת־עִ֣יר ׀ מִקְלַ֣ט הָֽרֹצֵ֗חַ אֶת־קֶ֨דֶשׁ בַּגָּלִ֤יל וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֙הָ֙ וְאֶת־חַמֹּ֥ת דֹּאר֙ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־קַרְתָּ֖ן וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים שָׁלֹֽשׁ׃
33The cities of the Gershonite clans came to thirteen in all, together with their pasturelands.
כָּל־עָרֵ֥י הַגֵּרְשֻׁנִּ֖י לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֑ם שְׁלֹשׁ־עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה עִ֖יר וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶֽן׃ ס
