Mentioned in the genealogy of Gad

Jorai is listed as one of the heads of the tribe of Gad in the genealogies of 1 Chronicles. He belonged to the leadership among the Gadites who lived in the territories of Gilead and Bashan.

13Their kinsmen, by their fathers' houses, were Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia, and Eber—seven in all.

The settlement of the Gadites in Bashan

Jorai and the other heads of Gad lived in the region of Bashan, which was a fertile land east of the Jordan. Their genealogies were recorded during the reigns of Jotham, king of Judah, and Jeroboam, king of Israel.

11The sons of Gad lived opposite them in the land of Bashan as far as Salecah:
12Joel the chief, Shapham the second, then Janai and Shaphat in Bashan.

13Their kinsmen, by their fathers' houses, were Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia, and Eber—seven in all.

14These were the sons of Abihail son of Huri, son of Jaroah, son of Gilead, son of Michael, son of Jeshishai, son of Jahdo, son of Buz;
15Ahi son of Abdiel, son of Guni, was head of their fathers' houses.
16They lived in Gilead, in Bashan and its villages, and in all the pasturelands of Sharon to their farthest limits.
17All of them were enrolled by genealogy in the days of Jotham king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.

Genealogical Records during Jotham and Jeroboam

The genealogies of the Gadites, including Jorai, were recorded in connection with official censuses under King Jotham of Judah and King Jeroboam II of Israel.

17All of them were enrolled by genealogy in the days of Jotham king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.

The Military Strength of the Gadites

The tribe of Gad, to which Jorai belonged, was known for its skilled warriors. The tribe had a strong military tradition and protected Israel's eastern border regions.

18The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had valiant men who carried shield and sword and drew the bow, trained for battle: forty-four thousand seven hundred sixty ready for military service.
19They waged war against the Hagrites, and against Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab.
20They were given help against them, and the Hagrites and all their allies were handed over to them, for they cried out to God in the battle, and he answered their plea because they trusted in him.
