Samuel was the last of the judges and the first great prophet after Moses. He was dedicated to the Lord from birth by his mother Hannah, grew up in the temple under Eli, and anointed both Saul and David as kings over Israel.

Hannah's Vow and the Birth of Samuel

Hannah prayed to God for a son and promised to dedicate him to the Lord's service. Samuel was born in answer to her prayer.

10In deep anguish Hannah prayed to the LORD, weeping bitterly.

11And she made a vow: "LORD of hosts, if you will only look on the misery of your servant and remember me, if you will not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor shall ever touch his head."

20In the course of time Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, "I asked the LORD for him."

God's Call in the Night

As a boy in the temple, Samuel heard God's voice three times during the night and was consecrated as a prophet.

4Then the LORD called to Samuel, and he answered, "Here I am."

5He ran to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." But Eli said, "I did not call. Go back and lie down." So he went and lay down.

6Again the LORD called, "Samuel!" Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, "Here I am; you called me." "I did not call, my son," he said. "Go back and lie down."

7Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.

8A third time the LORD called Samuel. He got up, went to Eli, and said, "Here I am; you called me." Then Eli understood that it was the LORD who was calling the boy.

10Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."

The Anointing of Saul

Samuel anointed Saul as Israel's first king in response to the people's demand for a monarch.

1Then Samuel took a flask of oil, poured it on Saul's head, and kissed him. He said, "Has not the LORD anointed you ruler over his inheritance?

The Rejection of Saul

Samuel proclaimed that God had rejected Saul as king because of his disobedience.

22But Samuel said: "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.

The Anointing of David

Samuel anointed the young shepherd David as king, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came upon him.

12So he sent for him and brought him in. He had a ruddy complexion, fine eyes, and a handsome face. And the LORD said, "Rise and anoint him; this is the one."
