In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen, who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."
So after fasting and praying, they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
Sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia and from there sailed to Cyprus.
When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. John was with them as their helper.
They traveled through the whole island as far as Paphos, where they found a Jewish magician and false prophet named Bar-Jesus,
who was with the proconsul Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. The proconsul sent for Barnabas and Saul, eager to hear the word of God.
But Elymas the magician—for that is what his name means—opposed them, trying to turn the proconsul away from the faith.
Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at him
and said, "You are full of every kind of deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all that is right! Will you never stop twisting the straight paths of the Lord?
Now look, the hand of the Lord is against you. You will be blind, unable to see the sun, for a time." Immediately a mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, looking for someone to lead him by the hand.
When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, astounded at the teaching of the Lord.
Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia, but John left them and returned to Jerusalem.
They went on from Perga and arrived at Antioch in Pisidia. On the Sabbath they went into the synagogue and sat down.
After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the synagogue leaders sent word to them: "Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, speak."
So Paul stood up, motioned with his hand, and said: "Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen to me.
The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made them a great people during their stay in Egypt; then with a mighty arm he led them out of it,
and for about forty years he bore with them in the wilderness.
He overthrew seven nations in Canaan and gave their land to our fathers as an inheritance.
All this took about four hundred and fifty years. After that he gave them judges, until the time of Samuel the prophet.
Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled for forty years.
After removing him, he raised up David to be their king, and testified about him: 'I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do all that I want him to do.'
From this man's descendants God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised.
Before his coming, John had proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.
As John was completing his course, he said: 'Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one. No, but one is coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.'
Brothers, children of Abraham, and you who fear God: it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent.
The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize him, and by condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath.
Though they found no ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.
When they had carried out everything written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb.
But God raised him from the dead,
and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to the people.
And we bring you the good news: what God promised our fathers
he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: 'You are my Son; today I have begotten you.'
And that he raised him from the dead, never to return to decay, he declared in these words: 'I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.'
So it is said in another place: 'You will not let your Holy One see decay.'
Now David, after serving God's purpose in his own generation, fell asleep, was laid with his fathers, and did see decay.
But the one whom God raised up did not see decay.
Therefore, brothers, know this: through him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you—and from everything from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses,
through him everyone who believes is justified.
Take care, then, that what is said in the Prophets does not come upon you:
'Look, you scoffers—marvel and perish! For I am doing a work in your days, a work you would never believe, even if someone told you.'
As they were leaving, the people urged them to speak about these things again on the next Sabbath.
When the assembly broke up, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke with them and urged them to remain in the grace of God.
On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord.
But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and contradicted what Paul was saying, heaping insults on him.
Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly: "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first. But since you reject it and do not judge yourselves worthy of eternal life, look, we are turning to the Gentiles.
For this is what the Lord has commanded us: 'I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.'"
When the Gentiles heard this, they rejoiced and glorified the word of the Lord, and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.
And the word of the Lord spread through the whole region.
But the Jews stirred up the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city, and they stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas and drove them out of their district.
So they shook the dust from their feet against them and went to Iconium.
And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
