The Great Commission
After his resurrection, Jesus meets the eleven disciples on a mountain in Galilee. He declares that he has been given all authority in heaven and on earth, and gives them the Great Commission: to go out and make disciples of all nations, baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey his commands. He promises to be with them every day until the end of the age. Parallel accounts in Mark and Luke emphasize the preaching of the gospel to all nations.
Matthieu 28,16-20
16Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.
Οἱ δὲ ἕνδεκα μαθηταὶ ἐπορεύθησαν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν εἰς τὸ ὄρος οὗ ἐτάξατο αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς,
17When they saw him, they worshiped him, though some doubted.
καὶ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν ⸀προσεκύνησαν, οἱ δὲ ἐδίστασαν.
18Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
καὶ προσελθὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐλάλησεν αὐτοῖς λέγων· Ἐδόθη μοι πᾶσα ἐξουσία ἐν οὐρανῷ καὶ ἐπὶ ⸀τῆς γῆς·
19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

πορευθέντες ⸀οὖν μαθητεύσατε πάντα τὰ ἔθνη, ⸀βαπτίζοντες αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ πατρὸς καὶ τοῦ υἱοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος,
20teaching them to keep everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
διδάσκοντες αὐτοὺς τηρεῖν πάντα ὅσα ἐνετειλάμην ὑμῖν· καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ μεθʼ ὑμῶν εἰμι πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας ἕως τῆς συντελείας τοῦ ⸀αἰῶνος.
Marc 16,15-18
15And he said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation.
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Πορευθέντες εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἅπαντα κηρύξατε τὸ εὐαγγέλιον πάσῃ τῇ κτίσει.
16Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
ὁ πιστεύσας καὶ βαπτισθεὶς σωθήσεται, ὁ δὲ ἀπιστήσας κατακριθήσεται.
17And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;
σημεῖα δὲ τοῖς πιστεύσασιν ⸂ταῦτα παρακολουθήσει⸃, ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου δαιμόνια ἐκβαλοῦσιν, γλώσσαις λαλήσουσιν ⸀καιναῖς,
18they will pick up snakes, and if they drink anything deadly it will not harm them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover."
⸀ὄφεις ἀροῦσιν κἂν θανάσιμόν τι πίωσιν οὐ μὴ αὐτοὺς βλάψῃ, ἐπὶ ἀρρώστους χεῖρας ἐπιθήσουσιν καὶ καλῶς ἕξουσιν.
Luc 24,46-49
46He said to them: "This is what is written: the Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὅτι οὕτως ⸀γέγραπται παθεῖν τὸν χριστὸν καὶ ἀναστῆναι ἐκ νεκρῶν τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ,
47and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
καὶ κηρυχθῆναι ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι αὐτοῦ μετάνοιαν ⸀καὶ ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν εἰς πάντα τὰ ἔθνη— ⸀ἀρξάμενοι ἀπὸ Ἰερουσαλήμ·
48You are witnesses of these things.
ὑμεῖς ⸀ἐστε μάρτυρες τούτων.
49And behold, I am sending upon you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."
καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ⸀ἐξαποστέλλω τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν τοῦ πατρός μου ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς· ὑμεῖς δὲ καθίσατε ἐν τῇ ⸀πόλει ἕως οὗ ἐνδύσησθε ⸂ἐξ ὕψους δύναμιν⸃.
Jean 21,1-23
1After this, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias. This is how he revealed himself.
Μετὰ ταῦτα ἐφανέρωσεν ἑαυτὸν πάλιν ⸀ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοῖς μαθηταῖς ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης τῆς Τιβεριάδος· ἐφανέρωσεν δὲ οὕτως.
2Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples of his were together.
ἦσαν ὁμοῦ Σίμων Πέτρος καὶ Θωμᾶς ὁ λεγόμενος Δίδυμος καὶ Ναθαναὴλ ὁ ἀπὸ Κανὰ τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ οἱ τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου καὶ ἄλλοι ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ δύο.
3Simon Peter said to them, "I'm going fishing." They said to him, "We're coming with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
λέγει αὐτοῖς Σίμων Πέτρος· Ὑπάγω ἁλιεύειν· λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· Ἐρχόμεθα καὶ ἡμεῖς σὺν σοί. ἐξῆλθον καὶ ἐνέβησαν εἰς τὸ ⸀πλοῖον, καὶ ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ νυκτὶ ἐπίασαν οὐδέν.
4When day was already breaking, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not know it was Jesus.
Πρωΐας δὲ ἤδη ⸀γενομένης ⸀ἔστη Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὸν αἰγιαλόν· οὐ μέντοι ᾔδεισαν οἱ μαθηταὶ ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἐστιν.
5So Jesus said to them, "Friends, haven't you caught anything to eat?" "No," they answered.
λέγει οὖν αὐτοῖς ⸀ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Παιδία, μή τι προσφάγιον ἔχετε; ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ· Οὔ.
6He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and they were no longer able to haul it in because of the great number of fish.
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Βάλετε εἰς τὰ δεξιὰ μέρη τοῦ πλοίου τὸ δίκτυον, καὶ εὑρήσετε. ἔβαλον οὖν, καὶ οὐκέτι αὐτὸ ἑλκύσαι ⸀ἴσχυον ἀπὸ τοῦ πλήθους τῶν ἰχθύων.
7Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he wrapped his outer garment around him, for he had stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea.
λέγει οὖν ὁ μαθητὴς ἐκεῖνος ὃν ἠγάπα ὁ Ἰησοῦς τῷ Πέτρῳ· Ὁ κύριός ἐστιν. Σίμων οὖν Πέτρος, ἀκούσας ὅτι ὁ κύριός ἐστιν, τὸν ἐπενδύτην διεζώσατο, ἦν γὰρ γυμνός, καὶ ἔβαλεν ἑαυτὸν εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν·
8The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards.
οἱ δὲ ἄλλοι μαθηταὶ τῷ πλοιαρίῳ ἦλθον, οὐ γὰρ ἦσαν μακρὰν ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἀλλὰ ὡς ἀπὸ πηχῶν διακοσίων, σύροντες τὸ δίκτυον τῶν ἰχθύων.
9When they came ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there with fish on it, and bread.
Ὡς οὖν ἀπέβησαν εἰς τὴν γῆν βλέπουσιν ἀνθρακιὰν κειμένην καὶ ὀψάριον ἐπικείμενον καὶ ἄρτον.
10Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you have just caught."
λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἐνέγκατε ἀπὸ τῶν ὀψαρίων ὧν ἐπιάσατε νῦν.
11So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish—a hundred and fifty-three of them. And though there were so many, the net was not torn.
ἀνέβη ⸀οὖν Σίμων Πέτρος καὶ εἵλκυσεν τὸ δίκτυον ⸂εἰς τὴν γῆν⸃ μεστὸν ἰχθύων μεγάλων ἑκατὸν πεντήκοντα τριῶν· καὶ τοσούτων ὄντων οὐκ ἐσχίσθη τὸ δίκτυον.
12Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?" for they knew it was the Lord.
λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Δεῦτε ἀριστήσατε. οὐδεὶς ⸀δὲ ἐτόλμα τῶν μαθητῶν ἐξετάσαι αὐτόν· Σὺ τίς εἶ; εἰδότες ὅτι ὁ κύριός ἐστιν.
13Jesus came, took the bread, and gave it to them, and the fish as well.
⸀ἔρχεται ⸀ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ λαμβάνει τὸν ἄρτον καὶ δίδωσιν αὐτοῖς, καὶ τὸ ὀψάριον ὁμοίως.
14This was now the third time Jesus revealed himself to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.
τοῦτο ἤδη τρίτον ἐφανερώθη ⸀ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοῖς ⸀μαθηταῖς ἐγερθεὶς ἐκ νεκρῶν.
15When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my lambs."
Ὅτε οὖν ἠρίστησαν λέγει τῷ Σίμωνι Πέτρῳ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Σίμων ⸀Ἰωάννου, ἀγαπᾷς με πλέον τούτων; λέγει αὐτῷ· Ναί, κύριε, σὺ οἶδας ὅτι φιλῶ σε. λέγει αὐτῷ· Βόσκε τὰ ἀρνία μου.
16A second time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Take care of my sheep."
λέγει αὐτῷ πάλιν δεύτερον· Σίμων ⸀Ἰωάννου, ἀγαπᾷς με; λέγει αὐτῷ· Ναί, κύριε, σὺ οἶδας ὅτι φιλῶ σε. λέγει αὐτῷ· Ποίμαινε τὰ πρόβατά μου.
17A third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved that Jesus asked him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep.
λέγει αὐτῷ τὸ τρίτον· Σίμων ⸀Ἰωάννου, φιλεῖς με; ἐλυπήθη ὁ Πέτρος ὅτι εἶπεν αὐτῷ τὸ τρίτον· Φιλεῖς με; καὶ ⸀εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Κύριε, ⸂πάντα σὺ⸃ οἶδας, σὺ γινώσκεις ὅτι φιλῶ σε. λέγει αὐτῷ ⸀ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Βόσκε τὰ ⸀πρόβατά μου.
18"Truly, truly, I tell you: when you were younger, you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go."
ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω σοι, ὅτε ἦς νεώτερος, ἐζώννυες σεαυτὸν καὶ περιεπάτεις ὅπου ἤθελες· ὅταν δὲ γηράσῃς, ἐκτενεῖς τὰς χεῖράς σου, καὶ ἄλλος ⸂σε ζώσει⸃ καὶ οἴσει ὅπου οὐ θέλεις.
19He said this to show by what kind of death Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, "Follow me."
τοῦτο δὲ εἶπεν σημαίνων ποίῳ θανάτῳ δοξάσει τὸν θεόν. καὶ τοῦτο εἰπὼν λέγει αὐτῷ· Ἀκολούθει μοι.
20Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them—the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and asked, "Lord, who is going to betray you?"
⸀Ἐπιστραφεὶς ὁ Πέτρος βλέπει τὸν μαθητὴν ὃν ἠγάπα ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀκολουθοῦντα, ὃς καὶ ἀνέπεσεν ἐν τῷ δείπνῳ ἐπὶ τὸ στῆθος αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν· Κύριε, τίς ἐστιν ὁ παραδιδούς σε;
21When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about him?"
τοῦτον ⸀οὖν ἰδὼν ὁ Πέτρος λέγει τῷ Ἰησοῦ· Κύριε, οὗτος δὲ τί;
22Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me."
λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἐὰν αὐτὸν θέλω μένειν ἕως ἔρχομαι, τί πρὸς σέ; σύ ⸂μοι ἀκολούθει⸃.
23So the word spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus had not said that he would not die, but, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?"
ἐξῆλθεν οὖν ⸂οὗτος ὁ λόγος⸃ εἰς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ὅτι ὁ μαθητὴς ἐκεῖνος οὐκ ἀποθνῄσκει. ⸂οὐκ εἶπεν δὲ⸃ αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι οὐκ ἀποθνῄσκει ἀλλʼ· Ἐὰν αὐτὸν θέλω μένειν ἕως ἔρχομαι, τί πρὸς σέ;

Jean 20,19-23
19That evening, on the first day of the week, the disciples were together behind locked doors for fear of the Jewish leaders. Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you."
Οὔσης οὖν ὀψίας τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ τῇ ⸀μιᾷ σαββάτων, καὶ τῶν θυρῶν κεκλεισμένων ὅπου ἦσαν οἱ ⸀μαθηταὶ διὰ τὸν φόβον τῶν Ἰουδαίων, ἦλθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἔστη εἰς τὸ μέσον, καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Εἰρήνη ὑμῖν.
20After saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
καὶ τοῦτο εἰπὼν ⸀ἔδειξεν τὰς χεῖρας καὶ τὴν πλευρὰν ⸀αὐτοῖς. ἐχάρησαν οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ ἰδόντες τὸν κύριον.
21Again Jesus said to them, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you."
εἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς ⸂ὁ Ἰησοῦς⸃ πάλιν· Εἰρήνη ὑμῖν· καθὼς ἀπέσταλκέν με ὁ πατήρ, κἀγὼ πέμπω ὑμᾶς.
22And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
καὶ τοῦτο εἰπὼν ἐνεφύσησεν καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Λάβετε πνεῦμα ἅγιον·
23If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness, it is withheld."
ἄν τινων ἀφῆτε τὰς ἁμαρτίας ⸀ἀφέωνται αὐτοῖς· ἄν τινων κρατῆτε κεκράτηνται.
