Ner (Kish's father, great-grandfather to King Saul (according to 1 Chron 8:33))

Great-grandfather to King Saul

Les jugesPatriarchc. 1100 BC

Ner was a man from the tribe of Benjamin and the father of Kish, who in turn was the father of Israel's first king, Saul. He is mentioned in the genealogies in 1 Chronicles as an important part of the Benjamite lineage that led to the monarchy. His role in the Bible is primarily genealogical, but he is significant as an ancestor of the first Israelite royal house.

Mentioned in Benjamin's Genealogy

Ner is listed in the genealogy of Benjamin's descendants as the father of Kish and thus an ancestor of King Saul.

33Ner fathered Kish, Kish fathered Saul, and Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchishua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.[^1] [^1]: Eshbaal is called Ish-bosheth in the books of Samuel.
39Ner was the father of Kish, Kish the father of Saul, and Saul the father of Jonathan, Malchi-shua, Abinadab, and Esh-baal.

Connection to Saul's Royal Line

Through his son Kish, Ner became the forefather of Israel's first royal dynasty. Saul, his grandson, was anointed king by the prophet Samuel.

1There was a man from Benjamin whose name was Kish son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, son of a Benjaminite; he was a man of standing.
2He had a son named Saul, young and handsome. There was no one among the Israelites more handsome than he; he stood head and shoulders above all the people.
1Then Samuel took a flask of oil, poured it on Saul's head, and kissed him. He said, "Has not the LORD anointed you ruler over his inheritance?

Connection to Abner

According to several biblical texts, Abner, Saul's military commander, was the son of Ner, making Abner a close relative of King Saul. Some texts describe Ner directly as Abner's father.

50His wife's name was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The commander of his army was Abner son of Ner, Saul's uncle.
51Kish, Saul's father, and Ner, Abner's father, were sons of Abiel.
8Meanwhile Abner son of Ner, the commander of Saul's army, had taken Ish-bosheth son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim,

Part of the inheritance of the tribe of Benjamin

Ner belonged to the tribe of Benjamin, the smallest of the tribes of Israel, which nevertheless had the honor of producing Israel's first king.

29In Gibeon lived Jeiel, the father of Gibeon, whose wife's name was Maacah.[^1] [^1]: The name Jeiel is supplied from the parallel list later in this book; the Hebrew here reads simply "the father of Gibeon."
30His firstborn son was Abdon, then Zur, Kish, Baal, Nadab,
33Ner fathered Kish, Kish fathered Saul, and Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchishua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.[^1] [^1]: Eshbaal is called Ish-bosheth in the books of Samuel.
35Jeiel the father of Gibeon lived in Gibeon; his wife's name was Maacah.
36His firstborn son was Abdon, then Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab,
39Ner was the father of Kish, Kish the father of Saul, and Saul the father of Jonathan, Malchi-shua, Abinadab, and Esh-baal.
