Accueil Personnages Shelah Shelah (also known as Shelah) was the third son of Judah and his Canaanite wife Bath-Shua. He was promised as a husband to Tamar after his two older brothers Er and Onan died, but Judah did not keep his promise. Shelah became the ancestor of a clan within the tribe of Judah.

5 Then she bore still another son and named him Shelah. Judah was at Chezib when she gave birth to him. héb וַתֹּ֤סֶף עוֹד֙ וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֔ן וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ שֵׁלָ֑ה וְהָיָ֥ה בִכְזִ֖יב בְּלִדְתָּ֥הּ אֹתֽוֹ׃
After Er and Onan died, Judah promised that Shelah would be given to Tamar as a husband when he grew up, but Judah did not keep the promise because he feared that Shelah would also die.
11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Live as a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah is grown up." For he thought, "He may die too, like his brothers." So Tamar went and settled in her father's house. héb וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוּדָה֩ לְתָמָ֨ר כַּלָּת֜וֹ שְׁבִ֧י אַלְמָנָ֣ה בֵית־אָבִ֗יךְ עַד־יִגְדַּל֙ שֵׁלָ֣ה בְנְ֔י כִּ֣י אָמַ֔ר פֶּן־יָמ֥וּת גַּם־ה֖וּא כְּאֶחָ֑יו וַתֵּ֣לֶךְ תָּמָ֔ר וַתֵּ֖שֶׁב בֵּ֥ית אָבִֽיהָ׃
14 So she took off her widow's clothes, covered herself with a veil and wrapped herself up, and sat down at the entrance to Enaim, on the road to Timnah. For she saw that although Shelah was grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife. héb וַתָּסַר֩ בִּגְדֵ֨י אַלְמְנוּתָ֜הּ מֵֽעָלֶ֗יהָ וַתְּכַ֤ס בַּצָּעִיף֙ וַתִּתְעַלָּ֔ף וַתֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ בְּפֶ֣תַח עֵינַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־דֶּ֣רֶךְ תִּמְנָ֑תָה כִּ֤י רָאֲתָה֙ כִּֽי־גָדַ֣ל שֵׁלָ֔ה וְהִ֕וא לֹֽא־נִתְּנָ֥ה ל֖וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃
26 Judah recognized them and said, "She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah." And he did not sleep with her again. héb וַיַּכֵּ֣ר יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ צָֽדְקָ֣ה מִמֶּ֔נִּי כִּֽי־עַל־כֵּ֥ן לֹא־נְתַתִּ֖יהָ לְשֵׁלָ֣ה בְנִ֑י וְלֹֽא־יָסַ֥ף ע֖וֹד לְדַעְתָּֽה׃

20 The sons of Judah by their clans were: from Shelah, the Shelanite clan; from Perez, the Perezite clan; from Zerah, the Zerahite clan. héb וַיִּהְי֣וּ בְנֵי־יְהוּדָה֮ לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם֒ לְשֵׁלָ֗ה מִשְׁפַּ֙חַת֙ הַשֵּׁ֣לָנִ֔י לְפֶ֕רֶץ מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת הַפַּרְצִ֑י לְזֶ֕רַח מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת הַזַּרְחִֽי׃

21 The sons of Shelah son of Judah: Er the father of Lecah, Laadah the father of Mareshah, and the clans of the linen workers' guild at Beth-ashbea; héb בְּנֵי֙ שֵׁלָ֣ה בֶן־יְהוּדָ֔ה עֵ֚ר אֲבִ֣י לֵכָ֔ה וְלַעְדָּ֖ה אֲבִ֣י מָרֵשָׁ֑ה וּמִשְׁפְּח֛וֹת בֵּית־עֲבֹדַ֥ת הַבֻּ֖ץ לְבֵ֥ית אַשְׁבֵּֽעַ׃
22 also Jokim, the men of Cozeba, and Joash and Saraph, who ruled in Moab, and Jashubi-lehem. These are ancient records. héb וְיוֹקִ֞ים וְאַנְשֵׁ֣י כֹזֵבָ֗א וְיוֹאָ֧שׁ וְשָׂרָ֛ף אֲשֶׁר־בָּעֲל֥וּ לְמוֹאָ֖ב וְיָשֻׁ֣בִי לָ֑חֶם וְהַדְּבָרִ֖ים עַתִּיקִֽים׃
