In the spring of the year, at the time when kings march out to war, Joab led out the armed forces and ravaged the land of the Ammonites. He came and laid siege to Rabbah, while David remained in Jerusalem. Joab struck Rabbah down and destroyed it.
David took the crown from the head of their king. He found that it weighed a talent of gold and was set with a precious stone, and he placed it on his own head. He also carried off a great quantity of plunder from the city. [Footnote: The Hebrew word rendered "their king" (malkam) may also be read as the name of the Ammonite god Milcom.]
He brought out the people who were in it and set them to labor with saws, iron picks, and axes. David did the same to all the cities of the Ammonites. Then David and all the troops returned to Jerusalem. [Footnote: The Hebrew verb is uncertain; it may also mean that David cut or sawed the captives, that is, subjected them to harsh punishment.]
Some time later war broke out with the Philistines at Gezer. It was then that Sibbecai the Hushathite struck down Sippai, one of the descendants of the Rephaim, and the Philistines were subdued.
There was war with the Philistines again, and Elhanan son of Jair struck down Lahmi, the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear shaft was like a weaver's beam.
There was war at Gath once more. A man of enormous size was there, with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in all. He too was descended from the Rephaim.
When he taunted Israel, Jonathan son of Shimea, David's brother, struck him down.
These were descendants of the Rephaim in Gath, and they fell at the hands of David and his men.
