Elisha had said to the woman whose son he had restored to life, "Get up and go, you and your household, and settle wherever you can, for the LORD has called for a famine, and it will come upon the land for seven years."

So the woman got up and did as the man of God had said. She went with her household and settled in the land of the Philistines for seven years.

At the end of the seven years the woman returned from the land of the Philistines, and she went to appeal to the king for her house and her land.

Now the king was speaking with Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, and said, "Tell me all the great things Elisha has done."

Just as Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had restored the dead to life, the very woman whose son he had restored came in to appeal to the king for her house and her land. And Gehazi said, "My lord the king, this is the woman, and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life."

The king questioned the woman, and she told him her story. Then the king assigned an official to her, saying, "Restore everything that belongs to her, along with all the income from her land from the day she left the country until now."

Elisha came to Damascus while Ben-hadad king of Aram was ill. When he was told, "The man of God has come here,"

the king said to Hazael, "Take a gift with you and go to meet the man of God. Inquire of the LORD through him: Will I recover from this illness?"

So Hazael went to meet him, taking with him a gift—the finest goods of Damascus, a load for forty camels. He came and stood before him and said, "Your son Ben-hadad king of Aram has sent me to ask you: Will I recover from this illness?"

Elisha said to him, "Go and tell him, 'You will certainly recover.'[^1] Yet the LORD has shown me that he will surely die." [^1]: The written Hebrew consonants here can be read as "tell him" or as "you will not certainly recover"; the traditional reading is "tell him."

Then he fixed his gaze on him and stared until Hazael was ashamed, and the man of God wept.

"Why is my lord weeping?" Hazael asked. He answered, "Because I know the harm you will do to the people of Israel. You will set their fortresses on fire, kill their young men with the sword, dash their little ones to pieces, and rip open their pregnant women."

Hazael said, "But what is your servant—a mere dog—that he should do such a great thing?" Elisha answered, "The LORD has shown me that you will become king over Aram."

Then Hazael left Elisha and went to his master, who asked him, "What did Elisha say to you?" He answered, "He told me that you would certainly recover."

But the next day he took a blanket, soaked it in water, and spread it over the king's face, and he died. And Hazael became king in his place.

In the fifth year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, while Jehoshaphat was king of Judah, Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat became king of Judah.

He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years.

He followed the ways of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, for he had married a daughter of Ahab. And he did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD.

Yet the LORD was unwilling to destroy Judah, for the sake of his servant David, since he had promised to give him a lamp for his descendants forever.

In his days Edom rebelled against the rule of Judah and set up a king of its own.

So Joram crossed over to Zair with all his chariots. He set out by night and struck the Edomites who had surrounded him, along with their chariot commanders, but his troops fled to their tents.

So Edom has been in rebellion against the rule of Judah to this day. Libnah also rebelled at that same time.

As for the rest of the acts of Joram and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah?

Joram rested with his fathers and was buried with them in the City of David. And his son Ahaziah became king in his place.

In the twelfth year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah son of Jehoram became king of Judah.

Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem one year. His mother's name was Athaliah, a granddaughter of Omri king of Israel.[^1] [^1]: Hebrew: "daughter of Omri"; the Hebrew word can also mean a more distant female descendant. Athaliah was the daughter of Ahab, Omri's son.

He followed the ways of the house of Ahab and did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD, as the house of Ahab had done, for he was related by marriage to the house of Ahab.

He went with Joram son of Ahab to war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth Gilead, and the Arameans wounded Joram.

So King Joram returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds the Arameans had inflicted on him at Ramah in his battle with Hazael king of Aram. And Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to Jezreel to visit Joram son of Ahab, because he was ill.

People

The Shunammite is the woman from Shunem whom we encountered in 2 Kings 4, where Elisha raised her son to life. Her presence at the court just as Gehasi recounts this miracle demonstrates divine timing within the narrative. The fact that she could appeal directly to the king regarding property rights shows that women in Israel possessed certain legal rights to present cases before the royal court.

Hazael was a prominent figure in Aramean (Syrian) history. Assyrian sources from Shalmaneser III refer to him as "son of no one" (Akkadian: mār la' mamman), suggesting he was not of royal lineage—this confirms the account that he seized power through a coup. The Kurkh Monolith and other inscriptions mention Hazael as a formidable opponent. He ruled Aram-Damascus from approximately 842 to about 800 B.C. and became one of Israel's most aggressive enemies.

Jehoram (Joram) of Judah and Ahaziah (Ahasja) represent the infiltration of Ahab's dynasty into Judah through marriage. Jehoram's wife was Athaliah, Ahab's daughter, and this dynastic marriage brought Baal worship into the southern kingdom. Ahaziah was thus Ahab's grandson on his mother's side.

Damascus was the capital of Aram (Syria) and one of the most important power centers in the Levant at that time. Strategically located along trade routes, it had been a rival to Israel since Solomon's era. Elisha's journey there highlights the prophet's international role—he was not merely an Israelite prophet but wielded influence beyond Israel's borders.

The land of the Philistines (verse 2) served as a refuge during the famine. The coastal plain where the Philistines lived often had different rainfall patterns than the highlands of Israel and could provide food when the interior suffered from drought. This was a known migration pattern during famines in the region.

Ramoth-gilead (verse 28) was a strategic fortress city east of the Jordan that had long been disputed between Israel and Aram. It was here that Ahab fell in battle (1 Kings 22), and now a new generation fought over the same city.

Events and Customs

The Gift to the Prophet (verses 8–9): Ben-Hadad sent an enormous gift—forty camel loads of "all good things from Damascus"—to consult the prophet about his illness. This was common practice in antiquity: giving gifts when seeking an oracle or prophetic word. The size of the gift reflects both the king's desperation and the prophet's reputation even outside Israel.

Regicide by Suffocation (verse 15): Hazael killed Ben-Hadad by placing a wet cloth (מַכְבֵּר, makhbēr) over his face. This method left no visible signs of violence and could be disguised as natural death due to illness. Such palace coups were common in the ancient Near East.

Edom's Secession (verses 20–22) marks a turning point in the relationship between Judah and Edom. Edom had been subject to Judah since David's time, but under Jehoram's weak rule, they declared independence and installed their own king.

Key Terms

"Lamp" (נִיר, nīr) in verse 19 is an important theological term. The Lord preserved Judah because of the promise to David that his lineage would always have a "lamp"—that is, a descendant on the throne. This image of a lamp that never goes out represents the continuity of the dynasty and God's faithfulness to the covenant with David (2 Samuel 7).

"Dog" (הַכֶּלֶב, hakkelev) in verse 13 is Hazael's self-designation in humble rhetorical style. In the ancient Near East, it was common to refer to oneself as a "dog" before someone of higher status—there are parallels in the Amarna letters. Hazael's question, "What is your servant, a dog?" expresses apparent humility, but ironically, his atrocities would surpass what he considered unthinkable.

Chapter-Specific Findings

The Tel Dan Stele, discovered in 1993–94, is an Aramaic inscription most likely erected by Hazael, in which he boasts of his victories over "the king of Israel" and the "House of David" (בית דוד). This is one of the most important extra-biblical confirmations of both Hazael and David's dynasty. The inscription confirms the biblical portrayal of Hazael as a brutal conqueror who inflicted great suffering on Israel.

Assyrian Annals from Shalmaneser III describe battles against "Hadadezer" (Ben-Hadad) and later against Hazael. These texts confirm the regime change in Damascus and provide independent confirmation of the political situation described in this chapter.
