Who is like the wise? Who knows how to interpret a thing? Wisdom lights up a person's face and softens the hardness of his features.

I say: keep the king's command, because of the oath sworn before God.

Do not be quick to leave his presence, and do not persist in a bad cause, for he does whatever he pleases.

The king's word carries authority, and who can say to him, "What are you doing?"

Whoever keeps the command will meet no harm, and a wise heart knows the right time and the right verdict.

For every matter has its time and its verdict, though a person's trouble weighs heavily on him.

For no one knows what is coming; who can tell him how it will be?

No one has power over the wind, to hold it back — no one has power over the day of death. There is no discharge in war, and wickedness will not save the one who practices it.

All this I saw, as I set my mind on every deed done under the sun: a time when one person rules over another to that person's harm.

And so I saw the wicked buried — they used to come and go from the holy place, and they were forgotten in the city where they had done such things. This too is vanity.

Because the sentence for an evil deed is not carried out quickly, the human heart is filled with the urge to do wrong.

Though the sinner does evil a hundred times and still lives long, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, who stand in awe before him.

But it will not be well with the wicked; his days will not stretch out like a lengthening shadow, because he does not fear God.

There is a vanity that happens on the earth: there are righteous people who receive what the deeds of the wicked deserve, and there are wicked people who receive what the deeds of the righteous deserve. I said that this too is vanity.

So I commended joy, since there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. This will go with him in his toil through the days of the life God has given him under the sun.

When I set my mind to know wisdom and to see the business that goes on upon the earth — how a man's eyes see no sleep, day or night —

then I saw all the work of God: that no one can grasp the work that is done under the sun. However hard a person labors to search it out, he will not find it; and even if the wise claim to know, they cannot find it.
