When the queen of Sheba heard of Solomon's fame, she came to Jerusalem to test him with hard questions. She arrived with a very large retinue, with camels carrying spices, gold in abundance, and precious stones. She came to Solomon and spoke with him about everything on her mind,
and Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too obscure for him to explain to her.
When the queen of Sheba had seen Solomon's wisdom, the palace he had built,
the food on his table, the seating of his officials, the attending servants in their robes, his cupbearers in their robes, and the stairway by which he went up to the house of the LORD, it took her breath away.
She said to the king, "The report I heard in my own country about your achievements and your wisdom is true.
I did not believe what they said until I came and saw it with my own eyes. And in fact, I was not told the half of the greatness of your wisdom; you far surpass the report I heard.
How fortunate are your people! How fortunate these servants of yours, who stand before you continually and hear your wisdom!
Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delighted in you and set you on his throne as king for the LORD your God. Because your God loves Israel and would establish them forever, he has made you king over them, to administer justice and righteousness."
Then she gave the king a hundred and twenty talents of gold, spices in great abundance, and precious stones. There has never been spice like that which the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.
The servants of Huram and the servants of Solomon, who brought gold from Ophir, also brought algum wood and precious stones.
The king used the algum wood to make steps for the house of the LORD and for the royal palace, and lyres and harps for the singers. Nothing like them had ever been seen before in the land of Judah.
King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba everything she asked for, besides all that she had brought to the king. Then she departed and returned to her own land with her servants.
The weight of the gold that came to Solomon in a single year was six hundred and sixty-six talents,
not counting what the traveling merchants and traders brought in. All the kings of Arabia and the governors of the land also brought gold and silver to Solomon.
King Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold, six hundred shekels of hammered gold going into each one, [footnote: The Hebrew does not state the unit of weight; "shekels" is supplied.]
and three hundred small shields of hammered gold, three hundred shekels of gold going into each one. The king put them in the House of the Forest of Lebanon.
The king also made a great throne of ivory and overlaid it with pure gold.
The throne had six steps, with a footstool of gold attached to it. On both sides of the seat were armrests, with a lion standing beside each of them,
and twelve lions stood on the six steps, one at either end of each step. Nothing like it had ever been made for any kingdom.
All King Solomon's drinking vessels were gold, and all the utensils of the House of the Forest of Lebanon were pure gold. Silver was reckoned as nothing in the days of Solomon,
for the king had a fleet of ships that sailed to Tarshish with Huram's servants. Once every three years the ships of Tarshish would return, bringing gold and silver, ivory, apes, and baboons. [footnote: The meaning of the Hebrew word rendered "baboons" is uncertain; it may refer to peacocks.]
So King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom.
All the kings of the earth sought an audience with Solomon, to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart.
Each of them brought a gift: articles of silver and gold, robes, weapons, spices, horses, and mules — year after year.
Solomon had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, which he stationed in the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem.
He ruled over all the kings from the Euphrates to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt. [footnote: Hebrew "the River," a standard designation for the Euphrates.]
The king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as plentiful as the sycamore-figs of the foothills.
Horses were imported for Solomon from Egypt and from all other lands.
As for the rest of the acts of Solomon, from beginning to end, are they not written in the records of Nathan the prophet, in the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and in the visions of Iddo the seer concerning Jeroboam son of Nebat?
Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years.
Then Solomon rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of David his father, and Rehoboam his son succeeded him as king.
