Palm Sunday

Påsk

Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. The start of Holy Week.

Bibelsk grunnlag

Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey while the crowd lays cloaks and palm branches on the road, shouting 'Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!' (Matt 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-44, John 12:12-19). Jesus weeps over Jerusalem: 'If you had only known on this day what would bring you peace.' The fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9 concerning the humble king.

Betydning

Jesus comes as a king, but on a donkey—the Prince of Peace, not a warrior hero. The joy soon turns to 'Crucify him!' Palm Sunday reveals both Jesus' kingship and the fickleness of the crowd. He is hailed today and despised tomorrow. It is a day with two sides—joy and sorrow, praise and warning.

GT-forbindelser

Zechariah 9:9: 'See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey.' Psalm 118:25-26: 'Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'—the liturgical psalm from the Feast of Tabernacles. 1 Kings 1:32-40 concerning Solomon's anointing, where he rides on the king's mule.
