34When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together,

35and one of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:

36"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?"

37He answered, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.'

38This is the great and first commandment.

39And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'

40On these two commandments hang the whole law and the prophets."

28One of the scribes came up and heard them debating. Seeing that Jesus had answered them well, he asked him, "Which commandment is the most important of all?"

29Jesus answered, "The most important is this: 'Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one,

30and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'

31The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these."

32The scribe said to him, "Well said, Teacher. You are right in saying that he is one and that there is no other besides him,

33and that to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, is worth far more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."

34When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And after that no one dared to question him any further.

25Then an expert in the law stood up to test him. "Teacher," he said, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

26Jesus said to him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?"

27He answered, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself."

28"You have answered correctly," Jesus said. "Do this and you will live."

15Then the Pharisees went off and made a plan to trap him in his own words.

16They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are truthful and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You are not swayed by anyone, for you show no partiality.

17So tell us what you think: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

18But Jesus knew their malice and said, "Why are you testing me, you hypocrites?

19Show me the coin used for the tax." They brought him a denarius,

20and he asked them, "Whose image is this, and whose inscription?"

21"Caesar's," they said. Then he told them, "So give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God."

22When they heard this, they were amazed; they left him and went away.

13Then they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to him to trap him in his words.

14They came and said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are truthful and that you court no one's favor, for you show no partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay the tax to Caesar or not? Should we pay or not?"

15But he saw through their hypocrisy and said to them, "Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it."

16They brought one, and he asked them, "Whose image is this, and whose inscription?" "Caesar's," they answered.

17Then Jesus said to them, "Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God." And they were utterly amazed at him.

20So they watched him closely and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, hoping to catch him in something he said, so they could hand him over to the rule and authority of the governor.

21They questioned him: "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and that you show no partiality, but teach the way of God truthfully.

22Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

23But he saw through their cunning and said to them,

24"Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it bear?" "Caesar's," they answered.

25He said to them, "Then give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God."

26They were unable to trap him in what he said in front of the people, and amazed at his answer, they fell silent.

"The kingdom of heaven is like a king who gave a wedding feast for his son.
He sent his servants to call those who had been invited to the wedding, but they refused to come.
So he sent other servants, saying, 'Tell those who have been invited: Look, my banquet is ready. My oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, and everything is prepared. Come to the wedding feast.'
But they paid no attention and went their way, one to his own farm, another to his business.
The rest seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them.
The king was furious. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.
Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.
So go out to the street corners and invite everyone you find to the wedding feast.'
Those servants went out into the streets and gathered everyone they found, both bad and good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.
Then the king told the attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot and throw him out into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
Then the Pharisees went off and made a plan to trap him in his own words.

"Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies without children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.
Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother.
The same happened with the second and the third, down to the seventh.
Last of all, the woman died.
In the resurrection, then, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her."
In the resurrection people neither marry nor are given in marriage; they are like the angels of God in heaven.
And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what God said to you:
'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living."
When the crowds heard this, they were astounded at his teaching.

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
"What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?" "David's," they answered.
He said to them, "Then how is it that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him Lord? For he says:
If David calls him Lord, how can he be his son?"
No one could answer him a word, and from that day on no one dared to question him any further.
