Then Job answered:
No doubt you are the people, and wisdom will die with you!
But I too have a mind like yours; I am not inferior to you. Who does not know such things as these?
I have become a laughingstock to my friends — I, who called on God and he answered me; the just and blameless man is a laughingstock.
Contempt for misfortune — that is the thought of the man at ease; it waits for those whose feet are slipping.
The tents of raiders are left in peace, and those who provoke God are secure — those who carry their god in their own hand.
But ask the animals, and they will teach you; the birds of the sky, and they will tell you.
Or speak to the earth, and it will teach you; let the fish of the sea declare it to you.
Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this?
In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.
Does not the ear test words as the palate tastes food?
Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding comes with length of days.
With God are wisdom and might; his are counsel and understanding.
See, what he tears down cannot be rebuilt; the man he shuts in cannot be released.
If he holds back the waters, there is drought; if he lets them loose, they overwhelm the land.
With him are strength and sound wisdom; the deceived and the deceiver are both his.
He leads counselors away stripped and makes fools of judges.
He loosens the fetters put on by kings and binds a loincloth around their waists.
He leads priests away stripped and overthrows the long established.
He silences the lips of trusted advisers and takes away the discernment of elders.
He pours contempt on nobles and loosens the belt of the mighty.
He uncovers the deep things of darkness and brings deep shadow into the light.
He makes nations great, and destroys them; he spreads nations abroad, and leads them away.
He takes away the understanding of the leaders of the people of the earth, and sends them wandering in a trackless waste.
They grope in darkness with no light; he makes them stagger like drunkards.
