For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and they all passed through the sea.

They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.

They all ate the same spiritual food,

and they all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and that rock was Christ.

Yet God was not pleased with most of them, and their bodies were scattered across the wilderness.

These things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil as they did.

Do not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written: "The people sat down to eat and drink, and got up to play."

Let us not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day.

Let us not put Christ to the test, as some of them did—and they were being destroyed by the snakes.

And do not grumble, as some of them did—and they were destroyed by the destroyer.

These things happened to them as examples, and they were written down as a warning for us, on whom the end of the ages has come.

So then, whoever thinks he is standing firm should watch out that he does not fall.

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear, but with the temptation he will also provide a way out, so that you can endure it.

Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

I am speaking to you as sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.

The cup of blessing that we bless—is it not a communion in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break—is it not a communion in the body of Christ?

Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

Consider Israel according to the flesh: are not those who eat the sacrifices partners in the altar?

What am I saying, then? That food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?

No, but that what they sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to be partners with demons.

You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot share in the table of the Lord and the table of demons.

Or are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he is?

"Everything is permitted"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permitted"—but not everything builds up.

No one should seek his own good, but the good of the other.

Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,

for "the earth is the Lord's, and everything in it."

If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising questions of conscience.

But if someone says to you, "This was offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it—for the sake of the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience.

I mean the other person's conscience, not your own. For why should my freedom be judged by someone else's conscience?

If I take part with thankfulness, why am I slandered for what I give thanks for?

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

Give no offense to Jews or Greeks or to the church of God,

just as I also try to please everyone in everything, not seeking my own advantage but that of many, so that they may be saved.
