How lonely she sits, the city once crowded with people! She has become like a widow—she who was great among the nations, a princess among the provinces, is now put to forced labor.
Bitterly she weeps in the night, tears on her cheeks. Among all her lovers there is none to comfort her. All her friends have betrayed her; they have become her enemies.
Judah has gone into exile out of misery and hard bondage. She dwells among the nations and finds no rest. All her pursuers have overtaken her in the midst of her distress.
The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to the appointed feasts. All her gates lie desolate, her priests groan, her young women grieve, and she herself is in bitterness.
Her foes have become her masters; her enemies are at ease. The LORD has brought her grief because of her many transgressions. Her children have gone away, captives before the enemy.
All splendor has departed from the daughter of Zion. Her princes have become like deer that find no pasture; they flee without strength before the pursuer.
In the days of her affliction and wandering, Jerusalem remembers all the treasures that were hers in days of old. When her people fell into the enemy's hand, there was no one to help her; her foes looked on and laughed at her ruin.
Jerusalem has sinned grievously, and so she has become unclean. All who honored her now despise her, for they have seen her nakedness. She herself groans and turns her face away.
Her filth clings to her skirts; she gave no thought to what would come. Her fall was astounding, and no one comforts her. "Look, O LORD, on my affliction, for the enemy has triumphed."
The enemy has laid his hand on all her treasures. She has watched the nations enter her sanctuary—those you had forbidden to come into your assembly.
All her people groan as they search for bread; they trade their treasures for food to keep themselves alive. "Look, O LORD, and see how worthless I have become."
Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look and see: is there any suffering like the suffering inflicted on me, which the LORD brought upon me on the day of his burning anger?
From on high he sent fire down into my bones and made it prevail. He spread a net for my feet and turned me back. He left me desolate, faint all the day long.
My transgressions are bound into a yoke; by his hand they were woven together and laid upon my neck. He has broken my strength. The Lord has handed me over to those I cannot withstand.
The Lord has rejected all the warriors within me. He summoned an assembly against me to crush my young men. The Lord has trampled the virgin daughter of Judah as grapes in a winepress.
This is why I weep; my eyes, my eyes stream with tears. For no comforter is near me, no one to revive my spirit. My children are ruined, for the enemy has prevailed.
Zion stretches out her hands, but there is no one to comfort her. The LORD has commanded that Jacob's neighbors become his foes; Jerusalem has become something unclean among them.
The LORD is righteous, for I rebelled against his word. Listen, all you peoples, and see my suffering: my young women and my young men have gone into captivity.
I called to my lovers, but they deceived me. My priests and my elders perished in the city while they searched for food to keep themselves alive.
Look, O LORD, for I am in distress. My insides churn; my heart is turned over within me, for I have rebelled bitterly. Outside the sword bereaves; inside there is death.
They have heard my groaning, but there is no one to comfort me. All my enemies have heard of my ruin and rejoice at what you have done. May you bring the day you have announced, so that they become like me.
Let all their evil come before you, and deal with them as you have dealt with me for all my transgressions. My groans are many, and my heart is sick.
