In the thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month, while I was among the exiles by the Kebar River, the heavens opened and I saw visions of God.
On the fifth day of the month—it was the fifth year of King Jehoiachin's exile—
the word of the LORD came to Ezekiel son of Buzi, the priest, in the land of the Chaldeans by the Kebar River; and there the hand of the LORD was upon him.
I looked, and there was a stormwind coming out of the north—a great cloud with fire flashing back and forth and a brilliant light all around it. At its center, out of the fire, was a gleam like burnished metal.
And within it were the figures of four living creatures. This was their appearance: they had a human likeness,
Each one had four faces, and each one had four wings.
Their legs were straight, and their feet were like the hooves of a calf, gleaming like polished bronze.
Under their wings, on all four sides, they had human hands; and all four of them had faces and wings.
Their wings touched one another. They did not turn as they moved; each one went straight ahead.
Their faces looked like this: each of the four had the face of a man in front, the face of a lion on the right, the face of an ox on the left, and the face of an eagle.
Such were their faces. Their wings were spread out above; each had two wings touching the wings of another, and two covering its body.
Each one went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they went, without turning as they moved.
The living creatures looked like burning coals of fire, like blazing torches. The fire moved to and fro among the creatures; the fire was bright, and out of it lightning flashed.
The creatures darted back and forth like flashes of lightning.
As I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the ground beside them, one for each of the four.
The wheels and their construction looked like sparkling topaz, and all four were alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel within a wheel.
When they moved, they went in any of their four directions; they did not turn as they went.
Their rims were high and awesome, and all four rims were full of eyes all around.
When the living creatures moved, the wheels moved beside them; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose too.
Wherever the spirit would go, they went, and the wheels rose along with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
When the creatures moved, they moved; when the creatures stood still, they stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
Above the heads of the living creatures was what looked like a vault, sparkling like awe-inspiring crystal, spread out above their heads.<fn>Hebrew *raqia*, the same word used for the expanse of sky in the creation account.</fn>
Under the vault their wings were stretched out straight, one toward the other, and each had two wings covering its body.
When they moved, I heard the sound of their wings, like the roar of rushing waters, like the voice of the Almighty, like the tumult of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings.
Then there came a voice from above the vault over their heads as they stood with lowered wings.
Above the vault over their heads was what looked like a throne of sapphire, and high above on the throne was a figure like that of a man.
I saw that from what appeared to be his waist up he was like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and from there down he looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded him.
Like a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. When I saw it, I fell facedown, and I heard the voice of one speaking.
