My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have struck hands in pledge for a stranger,
you are snared by the words of your own mouth, trapped by what you yourself have said.
Then do this, my son, and free yourself, for you have fallen into your neighbor's hands: go, humble yourself, and plead with him without letting up.
Give your eyes no sleep, your eyelids no rest.
Free yourself like a gazelle from the hunter's hand, like a bird from the snarer's grip.
Go to the ant, you sluggard; watch her ways and learn wisdom.
She has no commander, no overseer, no ruler,
yet she stores up her food in summer and gathers her provisions at harvest.
How long will you lie there, sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep?
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—
and poverty will come on you like a robber, want like an armed man.
A worthless person, a man of malice, goes about with crooked speech,
winking his eye, shuffling his feet, signaling with his fingers,
with perversity in his heart, plotting evil at every turn, always stirring up strife.
Therefore disaster will overtake him suddenly; in an instant he will be broken beyond healing.
There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him:
arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that hatches wicked schemes, feet that run swiftly to evil,
a false witness who breathes out lies, and a man who sows discord among brothers.
My son, keep your father's command, and do not forsake your mother's teaching.
Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck.
When you walk, they will guide you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; when you wake, they will speak with you.
For the command is a lamp, the teaching a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way of life,
keeping you from the evil woman, from the flattering tongue of the wayward woman.
Do not lust after her beauty in your heart or let her eyes take you captive.
For a prostitute costs you a loaf of bread, but another man's wife hunts down your very life.
Can a man scoop fire into his lap without burning his clothes?
Can a man walk on hot coals without scorching his feet?
So it is with the man who goes in to his neighbor's wife: no one who touches her will go unpunished.
People do not despise a thief who steals to satisfy his hunger,
yet if he is caught he must pay back sevenfold; he must hand over all the wealth of his house.
But whoever commits adultery has no sense; he destroys himself by what he does.
Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away.
For jealousy rouses a husband's fury, and he will show no mercy on the day of vengeance.
He will accept no compensation; no bribe, however large, will satisfy him.
