Better a dry crust with quiet than a house full of feasting with strife.

A prudent servant will rule over a disgraceful son and share the inheritance among the brothers.

Israelite law explicitly forbade judges from accepting bribes (Exodus 23:8; Deuteronomy 16:19), but Proverbs reflects a pragmatic observation of how bribes actually functioned in society—as a "magic charm" in the eyes of the giver.

Verse 18 describes the custom of "striking hands" (תּוֹקֵעַ כָּף, tokea kaf) as a guarantee for another person's debt. This was a binding legal act where one physically struck their hand against another person's hand to secure a loan. This practice is well documented in the ancient Near East and could lead to financial ruin if the borrower failed to repay.

The term "זִבְחֵי־רִיב" (zivche-riv) in verse 1, "sacrifices of strife", refers to peace offerings where the meat was eaten by the family in a festive meal.
