Mary Magdalene
Witness to the Resurrection
Mary Magdalene was one of Jesus' most faithful followers. Jesus had driven seven evil spirits out of her, and she followed him along with other women who supported his ministry. She was present at the cross, at the tomb, and became the first to see the risen Jesus.

2and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and diseases: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out;
καὶ γυναῖκές τινες αἳ ἦσαν τεθεραπευμέναι ἀπὸ πνευμάτων πονηρῶν καὶ ἀσθενειῶν, Μαρία ἡ καλουμένη Μαγδαληνή, ἀφʼ ἧς δαιμόνια ἑπτὰ ἐξεληλύθει,
3Joanna, the wife of Herod's steward Chuza; Susanna; and many others, who provided for them out of their own means.
καὶ Ἰωάννα γυνὴ Χουζᾶ ἐπιτρόπου Ἡρῴδου καὶ Σουσάννα καὶ ἕτεραι πολλαί, αἵτινες διηκόνουν αὐτοῖς ⸀ἐκ τῶν ὑπαρχόντων αὐταῖς.
9⟦Now when he had risen early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons.
⟦Ἀναστὰς δὲ πρωῒ πρώτῃ σαββάτου ἐφάνη πρῶτον Μαρίᾳ τῇ Μαγδαληνῇ, ⸀παρʼ ἧς ἐκβεβλήκει ἑπτὰ δαιμόνια.
At the Foot of the Cross
Mary Magdalene was among the women who stood at the cross and watched Jesus die.
55Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee, caring for his needs.
Ἦσαν δὲ ἐκεῖ γυναῖκες πολλαὶ ἀπὸ μακρόθεν θεωροῦσαι, αἵτινες ἠκολούθησαν τῷ Ἰησοῦ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας διακονοῦσαι αὐτῷ·
56Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.
ἐν αἷς ἦν Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία ἡ τοῦ Ἰακώβου καὶ ⸀Ἰωσὴφ μήτηρ καὶ ἡ μήτηρ τῶν υἱῶν Ζεβεδαίου.
25Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
Εἱστήκεισαν δὲ παρὰ τῷ σταυρῷ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἡ ἀδελφὴ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ, Μαρία ἡ τοῦ Κλωπᾶ καὶ Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνή.
At the Tomb
Mary Magdalene was present when Jesus was laid in the tomb and noted where he was placed.
61Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there, facing the tomb.
ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ ⸀Μαριὰμ ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ ἡ ἄλλη Μαρία καθήμεναι ἀπέναντι τοῦ τάφου.
The Empty Tomb
Early in the morning, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found it empty. She ran to tell Peter and John.
1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
Τῇ δὲ μιᾷ τῶν σαββάτων Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ ἔρχεται πρωῒ σκοτίας ἔτι οὔσης εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον, καὶ βλέπει τὸν λίθον ἠρμένον ἐκ τοῦ μνημείου.
2So she ran to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and told them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him."
τρέχει οὖν καὶ ἔρχεται πρὸς Σίμωνα Πέτρον καὶ πρὸς τὸν ἄλλον μαθητὴν ὃν ἐφίλει ὁ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Ἦραν τὸν κύριον ἐκ τοῦ μνημείου, καὶ οὐκ οἴδαμεν ποῦ ἔθηκαν αὐτόν.
Meeting the Risen One
Mary wept at the tomb when Jesus appeared to her. She recognized him when he said her name and became the first to proclaim the resurrection.
11But Mary stood outside the tomb, weeping. As she wept, she bent down to look inside,
Μαρία δὲ εἱστήκει πρὸς ⸂τῷ μνημείῳ ἔξω κλαίουσα⸃. ὡς οὖν ἔκλαιεν παρέκυψεν εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον,
14With that she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know it was Jesus.
⸀ταῦτα εἰποῦσα ἐστράφη εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω, καὶ θεωρεῖ τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἑστῶτα, καὶ οὐκ ᾔδει ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἐστιν.
15"Woman, why are you weeping?" Jesus said to her. "Who is it you are looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him off, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him away."
λέγει ⸀αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς· Γύναι, τί κλαίεις; τίνα ζητεῖς; ἐκείνη δοκοῦσα ὅτι ὁ κηπουρός ἐστιν λέγει αὐτῷ· Κύριε, εἰ σὺ ἐβάστασας αὐτόν, εἰπέ μοι ποῦ ἔθηκας αὐτόν, κἀγὼ αὐτὸν ἀρῶ.
16Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned to him and said in Aramaic, "Rabboni!"—which means Teacher.
λέγει ⸀αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς· ⸀Μαριάμ. στραφεῖσα ἐκείνη λέγει αὐτῷ ⸀Ἑβραϊστί· Ραββουνι (ὃ λέγεται Διδάσκαλε).
17Jesus said to her, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"
λέγει ⸀αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς· Μή μου ἅπτου, οὔπω γὰρ ἀναβέβηκα πρὸς τὸν ⸀πατέρα· πορεύου δὲ πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφούς μου καὶ εἰπὲ αὐτοῖς· Ἀναβαίνω πρὸς τὸν πατέρα μου καὶ πατέρα ὑμῶν καὶ θεόν μου καὶ θεὸν ὑμῶν.
18Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them that he had said these things to her.
ἔρχεται ⸀Μαριὰμ ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ ⸀ἀγγέλλουσα τοῖς μαθηταῖς ὅτι ⸀Ἑώρακα τὸν κύριον καὶ ταῦτα εἶπεν αὐτῇ.
