Shallum

Israel's Brief Reigning King

Även känd som: Shallun

Det delade kungariketKingc. 752 BC

Shallum, son of Jabesh, was one of the shortest-reigning kings in the northern kingdom of Israel. He seized power by assassinating King Zechariah and ruled for only one month in Samaria before being killed himself by Menahem, son of Gadi. His brief reign illustrates the political instability and violence that characterized the final decade of the northern kingdom.

Conspiracy Against King Zechariah

Shallum conspired against King Zechariah, son of Jeroboam II, killed him publicly, and thus took the throne of Israel.

10Shallum son of Jabesh conspired against him, struck him down in front of the people, killed him, and became king in his place.

Ascended to Israel's Throne

After the murder of Zechariah, Shallum became king over Israel in Samaria, but his reign lasted only one month.

13Shallum son of Jabesh became king in the thirty-ninth year of Uzziah king of Judah, and he reigned a full month in Samaria.

Fulfillment of the Lord's Word to Jehu

The fall of Zechariah and Shallum's rise to power marked the end of Jehu's dynasty, which the Lord had promised would sit on Israel's throne for four generations.

12This fulfilled the word the LORD had spoken to Jehu: "Your descendants to the fourth generation will sit on the throne of Israel." And so it was.
30The LORD said to Jehu, "Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in my eyes and have done to the house of Ahab all that I had in mind, your descendants to the fourth generation will sit on the throne of Israel."

Menahem Rises Against Shallum

Menahem, son of Gadi, went up from Tirzah to Samaria and struck Shallum down and became king in his place.

14Then Menahem son of Gadi went up from Tirzah to Samaria, struck down Shallum son of Jabesh there, killed him, and became king in his place.

Summary of Shallum's brief reign

Shallum's reign of only one month is among the shortest in the Bible and testifies to the chaotic political situation in the final days of the Northern Kingdom.

13Shallum son of Jabesh became king in the thirty-ninth year of Uzziah king of Judah, and he reigned a full month in Samaria.

14Then Menahem son of Gadi went up from Tirzah to Samaria, struck down Shallum son of Jabesh there, killed him, and became king in his place.
15The rest of the acts of Shallum, and the conspiracy he led, are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.
