And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,

in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the realm of the air, the spirit now at work in those who are disobedient.

Among them we all once lived, following the cravings of our flesh, carrying out the will of the flesh and the mind; and by nature we were children of wrath, like everyone else.

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,

made us alive together with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses—by grace you have been saved—

and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

so that in the ages to come he might display the surpassing riches of his grace, shown in his kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not from yourselves—it is the gift of God,

not from works, so that no one may boast.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

So then, remember that you were once Gentiles in the flesh, called "the uncircumcised" by those who call themselves "the circumcised"—a circumcision performed in the flesh by human hands.

Remember that at that time you were without Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel, strangers to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.

But now in Christ Jesus you who were once far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and torn down the dividing wall of hostility through his flesh,

abolishing the law with its commandments and regulations, so that in himself he might create the two into one new humanity, making peace,

and might reconcile both to God in one body through the cross, by which he put the hostility to death.

And he came and proclaimed the good news of peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near;

for through him we both have access to the Father in one Spirit.

So you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God's household,

built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone.

In him the whole structure is joined together and rises into a holy temple in the Lord;

and in him you too are being built together into a dwelling place for God in the Spirit.

For Jews, circumcision was a covenant sign dating back to Abraham, while Gentiles were regarded as ritual outsiders. This terminology could be derogatory when applied to "the others," which Paul hints at by writing "those who are called"—he indicates that these are human designations.

The expression "citizenship of Israel" (πολιτεία, v. 12) draws language from the social structure of the Greco-Roman city-state. Citizenship granted rights, protection, and belonging. For Gentiles in Ephesus, a city where citizenship was highly valued, this imagery would have been immediately understandable. To be a "foreigner" (ξένος) and "stranger" (πάροικος) meant living without legal protection or social belonging—a marginalized existence many in the congregation knew from personal experience.

The phrase "ἄρχοντα τῆς ἐξουσίας τοῦ ἀέρος" (the ruler of the power of the air, v. 2) reflects a widespread ancient belief that evil spiritual powers dwelt in the space between earth and heaven. Both Jewish apocalyptic literature and Greco-Roman folklore placed demons and evil spirits in this sphere. The complete inscription in Greek reads: "No foreigner may enter within the fence and barrier around the sanctuary. Whoever is caught will be responsible for their own death."
