Now the main point of what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,

a minister in the sanctuary and in the true tent, which the Lord set up, not any human being.

Every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; therefore it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer.

Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are already those who offer the gifts prescribed by the law.

They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, just as Moses was instructed when he was about to erect the tent: "See that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain."

But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry as far superior as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is established on better promises.

For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no need to look for a second.

For God finds fault with them when he says: "Look, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.

It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers on the day I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, for they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and so I turned away from them, declares the Lord.

This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

No longer will anyone teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.

For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more."

By speaking of a new covenant, he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging is about to disappear.

The reference to Moses on the mountain (v. 5) points back to Sinai, where Moses, according to Exodus 25:40, was shown the heavenly pattern (τύπος) for the tabernacle. The idea that earthly sanctuaries were copies of heavenly originals was widespread in antiquity, both in Jewish tradition (as in Wisdom of Solomon 9:8) and in Platonic philosophy. For first-generation Christians with a Jewish background, this way of thinking represented a familiar framework for interpreting Jesus’ priestly service.

Events and Customs

The offering service of the Levitical priesthood forms the background for the chapter’s argument. The high priest (ἀρχιερεύς) had as his main task to present gifts and sacrifices (v. 3). This service took place daily in the temple and culminated annually on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). The chapter assumes that readers knew priests had to belong to the tribe of Levi to serve lawfully "on earth" (v. 4) – a regulation that would have excluded Jesus, who was from the tribe of Judah.

When Hebrews quotes Jeremiah 31:31–34 (vv. 8–12), it uses the Septuagint’s rendering of the Hebrew בְּרִית (berit). In an ancient Near Eastern context, a covenant was a binding relationship between two parties, often with divine witnesses and obligations. The term μεσίτης (mesitēs, "mediator") in verse 6 was a legal term describing someone who guaranteed and facilitated an agreement between parties.

The expression ὑπόδειγμα καὶ σκιά ("example and shadow") in verse 5 reflects Platonic thought that was well known in Hellenistic Judaism, especially through Philo of Alexandria. The shadow suggests something temporary and incomplete that points toward the true substance.

Chapter-Specific Findings

The long quotation from Jeremiah 31:31–34 (vv. 8–12) is one of the longest continuous Old Testament quotations in the New Testament. The text form follows the Septuagint closely, with some minor variations. The Qumran community at the Dead Sea understood itself as the people of the "new covenant" (cf. Damascus Document), showing that the expectation of a new covenant was alive in Judaism during Jesus’ time. The difference is that Hebrews links the fulfillment directly to Jesus’ person and work, not to a new interpretation of the law or a new social order.
