The word of the LORD that came to Joel son of Pethuel:
Hear this, you elders; listen, all who live in the land. Has anything like this happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers?
Tell it to your children, and let your children tell theirs, and their children the generation after them.
What the cutting locust left, the swarming locust has eaten; what the swarming locust left, the hopping locust has eaten; and what the hopping locust left, the destroying locust has eaten.
Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you drinkers of wine, over the sweet wine, for it is cut off from your mouth.
A nation has invaded my land, mighty and beyond number. Its teeth are the teeth of a lion; it has the fangs of a lioness.
It has laid waste my vines and splintered my fig trees; it has stripped them bare and thrown them down, leaving their branches white.
Mourn like a young woman in sackcloth, grieving for the husband of her youth.
Grain offering and drink offering are cut off from the house of the LORD; the priests, the ministers of the LORD, are in mourning.
The fields are ruined, the ground mourns, for the grain is destroyed, the new wine has dried up, the olive oil fails.
Be ashamed, you farmers; wail, you vinedressers, over the wheat and the barley, for the harvest of the field is lost.
The vine is withered and the fig tree droops; pomegranate, palm, and apple—every tree of the field is dried up. Indeed, joy has withered away from the people.
Put on sackcloth and lament, you priests; wail, you ministers of the altar. Come, spend the night in sackcloth, you ministers of my God, for grain offering and drink offering are withheld from the house of your God.
Consecrate a fast; call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders and all who live in the land to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD.
Alas for the day! For the day of the LORD is near; it comes like devastation from the Almighty.
Has not the food been cut off before our very eyes—joy and gladness from the house of our God?
The seeds shrivel under the clods; the storehouses lie desolate, the granaries are broken down, for the grain has dried up.
How the cattle groan! The herds mill about, for they have no pasture; even the flocks of sheep suffer.
To you, LORD, I call, for fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and flames have burned up every tree of the field.
Even the wild animals pant for you, for the streams of water are dried up, and fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.
