The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Lord GOD says concerning Edom: We have heard a report from the LORD, and a messenger has been sent among the nations: "Rise up! Let us go to war against her!"

See, I will make you least among the nations; you will be utterly despised.

The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock and make the heights your home, who say to yourself, "Who can bring me down to the ground?"

Though you soar like the eagle and set your nest among the stars, even from there I will bring you down, declares the LORD.

If thieves came to you, if robbers came by night—how you will be ruined!—would they not steal only what they wanted? If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave a few grapes behind?

How Esau will be ransacked, his hidden treasures hunted out!

All your allies will drive you to the border; those at peace with you will deceive you and overpower you. Those who eat your bread will set a trap for you, and you will not see it coming.

On that day, declares the LORD, will I not destroy the wise men of Edom, and understanding from the mountain of Esau?

Your warriors will be filled with terror, Teman, so that everyone will be cut off from the mountain of Esau by the slaughter.

Because of the violence you did to your brother Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be cut off forever.

On the day you stood aside, on the day strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem—you were like one of them.

Do not gloat over your brother on the day of his misfortune; do not rejoice over the people of Judah on the day of their ruin; do not boast on the day of their distress.

Do not enter the gate of my people on the day of their disaster; do not gloat over their suffering on the day of their disaster; do not lay hands on their wealth on the day of their disaster.

Do not wait at the crossroads to cut down their fugitives; do not hand over their survivors on the day of distress.

For the day of the LORD is near for all the nations. As you have done, so it will be done to you; your deeds will come back on your own head.

For as you drank on my holy mountain, so all the nations will drink without ceasing. They will drink and stagger, and they will be as though they had never been.

But on Mount Zion there will be deliverance, and it will be holy, and the house of Jacob will possess its inheritance.

The house of Jacob will be a fire and the house of Joseph a flame; the house of Esau will be stubble. They will set it ablaze and consume it, and there will be no survivor left of the house of Esau—for the LORD has spoken.

Those from the Negev will possess the mountain of Esau, and those from the foothills the land of the Philistines. They will possess the fields of Ephraim and Samaria, and Benjamin will possess Gilead.

This company of exiles of Israel will possess the land of the Canaanites as far as Zarephath, and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the cities of the Negev.

Deliverers will go up on Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esau, and the kingdom will belong to the LORD.
