Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time:
"Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message I give you."
So Jonah got up and went to Nineveh, as the LORD had said. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three days' journey across.
Jonah began to make his way into the city, a day's journey in, and he called out, "Forty days more, and Nineveh will be overthrown!"
And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called a fast, and everyone from the greatest to the least put on sackcloth.
When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat down in the ashes.
Then he had this proclamation cried out in Nineveh: "By decree of the king and his nobles: No person or animal, no herd or flock, is to taste anything. They shall not graze, and they shall not drink water.
Let people and animals alike cover themselves with sackcloth. Let them cry out to God with all their strength, and let each one turn from his evil way and from the violence in his hands.
Who knows? God may yet turn and relent; he may turn away from his burning anger, so that we do not perish.
When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, he relented concerning the disaster he had threatened to bring on them, and he did not do it.
