The Holy Spirit is poured out. The birthday of the Church.

Fifty days after Easter: "They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues" (Acts 2:1-13). A mighty wind fills the house, and tongues of fire rest on each of them. Jews from every nation hear their own language. Peter delivers his first sermon and quotes Joel 3:1-5: "I will pour out my Spirit on all people." Three thousand are baptized (Acts 2:14-41).
Betydning
Pentecost is the day of the Spirit and the birthday of the Church. The miracle of languages reverses the confusion at Babel (Genesis 11)—what divided humanity is united in the Spirit. Joel's prophecy is fulfilled: the Spirit is given not only to prophets and kings, but to all—sons and daughters, young and old, slaves and free. The Church is born as a community of all nations.

Joel 3:1-5 concerning the outpouring of the Spirit on all people (Peter's main quotation). The confusion of languages at Babel (Genesis 11) is reversed. The Sinai theophany with fire, wind, and divine speech (Exodus 19-20)—the Pentecost narrative mirrors Sinai with tongues of fire and a storm. Ezekiel 37 where the Spirit (ruach) breathes life into dry bones. Isaiah 44:3: "I will pour water on the thirsty land and my Spirit on your offspring." Liturgisk kontekst
Red color (the fire of the Spirit). One of the three great feasts of the church year (Christmas, Easter, Pentecost). Some traditions release doves, blow wind into the church, or speak in many languages. Confirmation is traditionally linked to Pentecost. Pentecost concludes the Easter season.
Historie
Pentecost has been celebrated since the earliest days of the Church as the conclusion of the fifty days after Easter. Baptism was early on associated with Pentecost in addition to Easter night. The celebration of Pentecost coincides with Shavuot—the Jewish festival of weeks that commemorates the giving of the Law at Sinai. Church Fathers (especially Augustine) saw the parallel: at Sinai the Law was given on stone tablets; at Pentecost, the Law was written on hearts by the Spirit.
