Preservation of the teaching and Onesiphorus' faithfulness
Paul urges Timothy to hold fast to the pattern of sound words and to guard the good deposit through the Holy Spirit. He notes that everyone in Asia has turned away from him, but he remembers Onesiphorus, who was not ashamed of his chains and searched diligently for him when he arrived in Rome.
2 Timothy 1,13-18
13Hold to the pattern of the sound words you heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
ὑποτύπωσιν ἔχε ὑγιαινόντων λόγων ὧν παρʼ ἐμοῦ ἤκουσας ἐν πίστει καὶ ἀγάπῃ τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ·
14Guard the good deposit entrusted to you through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.
τὴν καλὴν παραθήκην φύλαξον διὰ πνεύματος ἁγίου τοῦ ἐνοικοῦντος ἐν ἡμῖν.
15You know that everyone in Asia has turned away from me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.
Οἶδας τοῦτο ὅτι ἀπεστράφησάν με πάντες οἱ ἐν τῇ Ἀσίᾳ, ὧν ἐστιν Φύγελος καὶ Ἑρμογένης.
16May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains.
δῴη ἔλεος ὁ κύριος τῷ Ὀνησιφόρου οἴκῳ, ὅτι πολλάκις με ἀνέψυξεν, καὶ τὴν ἅλυσίν μου οὐκ ἐπαισχύνθη·
17On the contrary, when he came to Rome he searched hard for me until he found me.
ἀλλὰ γενόμενος ἐν Ῥώμῃ ⸀σπουδαίως ἐζήτησέν με καὶ εὗρεν—
18May the Lord grant that he find mercy from the Lord on that Day. And you know very well how much service he rendered in Ephesus.
δῴη αὐτῷ ὁ κύριος εὑρεῖν ἔλεος παρὰ κυρίου ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ— καὶ ὅσα ἐν Ἐφέσῳ διηκόνησεν, βέλτιον σὺ γινώσκεις.
