Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,

to Timothy, my beloved child: grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience as my forefathers did, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day.

Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy.

I am reminded of your sincere faith, which lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am convinced that it lives in you as well.

That is why I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God that is in you through the laying on of my hands.

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and self-control.

So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, or of me, his prisoner. Instead, share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God,

who saved us and called us with a holy calling—not because of our works, but because of his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before time began

and has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

For this gospel I was appointed a herald, an apostle, and a teacher.

That is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know the one in whom I have put my trust, and I am convinced that he is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that Day.

Hold to the pattern of the sound words you heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

Guard the good deposit entrusted to you through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.

You know that everyone in Asia has turned away from me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.

May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains.

On the contrary, when he came to Rome he searched hard for me until he found me.

May the Lord grant that he find mercy from the Lord on that Day. And you know very well how much service he rendered in Ephesus.

People

Lois and Eunice (v. 5) are the only places in the New Testament where Timothy’s grandmother and mother are mentioned by name. The name Λωΐς (Lois) is Greek, but its etymology is uncertain, while Εὐνίκη (Eunike) means "good victory." Both names were common in the Hellenistic world. That Paul highlights their "sincere faith" (ἀνυπόκριτος πίστις) suggests they were Jewish women who came to believe in Christ, likely during Paul’s first visit to Lystra (Acts 14:8–20). According to Acts 16:1, Timothy’s father was a Greek, placing the family in a mixed Jewish-Gentile context typical of Diaspora Judaism in Asia Minor.

Phygellus and Hermogenes (v. 15) are mentioned only here in the New Testament as examples of those who turned away from Paul in the province of Asia. Both names are Greek – Φύγελος may be derived from φυγή ("flight"), while Ἑρμογένης means "born of Hermes." We do not know specifically what their apostasy involved, but the context suggests they failed Paul in a critical situation, possibly during his arrest or trial.

Onesiphorus (vv. 16–18) is presented as a positive contrast to Phygellus and Hermogenes. The name Ὀνησίφορος means "one who brings profit/help" – a meaning Paul likely alludes to. That Paul asks for mercy on behalf of "Onesiphorus’s household" (οἶκος) rather than him personally, combined with the prayer that he may "find mercy on that day," has led many scholars to assume Onesiphorus was already dead when the letter was written. He had served both in Ephesus and sought out Paul in Rome despite the risks associated with visiting a prisoner.

Places

The province of Asia (v. 15) refers to the Roman province in western Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), with Ephesus as its capital. This was one of the most important areas for early Christian mission, but also a center for emperor worship and the cult of Artemis. That "all in Asia" had turned away from Paul is probably hyperbolic, yet it reflects a real crisis where many Christians distanced themselves from the imprisoned apostle, possibly out of fear of persecution.

Rome (v. 17) is mentioned as the place where Onesiphorus sought out and found Paul. Under Nero’s rule (54–68 AD), having connections with Christian leaders was risky. That Onesiphorus "diligently" (σπουδαίως) searched for Paul suggests the apostle was held in stricter imprisonment than during his first stay in Rome (Acts 28), perhaps in a more secure prison facility.

Events and Customs

Laying on of hands (v. 6) – The expression "laying on of hands" (ἐπίθεσις τῶν χειρῶν) refers to an established practice both in Jewish tradition and the early church. In the Old Testament, laying on of hands was used for blessing (Gen 48:14), ordination of leaders (Num 27:18–23), and sacrifices. In the early church, this practice continued for installation into ministry, impartation of spiritual gifts, and healing. Here Paul reminds Timothy of a specific moment when he received a gift of grace through Paul’s laying on of hands, likely at his ordination to ministry (cf. 1 Tim 4:14, where the laying on of hands by the council of elders is also mentioned).

My chains (v. 16) – That Onesiphorus "was not ashamed of my chains" (τὴν ἅλυσίν μου οὐκ ἐπαισχύνθη) points to the social shame associated with imprisonment in the Roman world. A prisoner lost their honor and social status, and visiting or supporting a prisoner could bring suspicion and danger. The Greek word ἅλυσις specifically denotes a metal chain, indicating that Paul was chained to a guard or held in a cell, as opposed to the milder house arrest described in Acts 28.

Key Terms

Χάρισμα (charisma, v. 6) – This word refers to a gift of grace, a special empowerment given by God for service. The verb ἀναζωπυρεῖν ("to fan into flame," "to rekindle") uses the image of blowing on embers to make the fire blaze up again. This does not suggest that Timothy’s gift had gone out, but rather that it needed to be activated more intensely in light of the challenges he faced.

Παραθήκη (paratheke, vv. 12, 14) – This legal and commercial term refers to something valuable entrusted to another for safekeeping, with the expectation that it will be returned intact. In Hellenistic business practice, this was a formal deposit arrangement with legal protection. Paul uses the term in two ways: in v. 12 it concerns what Paul has entrusted to God (his life and ministry), while in v. 14 it concerns what God has entrusted to Timothy (the gospel and sound teaching). This terminology underscores the responsibility to preserve the apostolic tradition unchanged.

Ἐπιφάνεια (epifaneia, v. 10) – The term "appearing" or "manifestation" was charged with political-religious significance in the Hellenistic and Roman world. It was used for the visible intervention of gods and for the majestic arrival of an emperor into a city. By applying this term to Christ, Paul makes a bold theological point: the true divine appearing did not occur through the emperor, but through Jesus Christ, who has "abolished death" (καταργήσαντος τὸν θάνατον).

Σωφρονισμός (sofronismos, v. 7) – This word, often translated as "self-discipline" or "sound judgment," appears only here in the New Testament. It is derived from σώφρων, one of the four cardinal virtues in Greek philosophy. The term implies sound judgment, self-control, and a balance between reason and emotion – qualities highly valued in Greco-Roman culture, which Paul here attributes to God’s Spirit.
