Parables of Jesus

The Parable of the Rich Farmer

A man in the crowd asked Jesus to tell his brother to share the inheritance with him. Jesus replied that he was not appointed as a judge or arbitrator, and warned: "Beware of all greed! For a person's life does not consist in the abundance of what they possess." Then he told a parable: A rich man had land that produced well, and he did not know where to store his harvest. He decided to tear down his barns and build larger ones, gather all his grain and goods, and say to himself: "You have many good things stored up for many years. Rest easy, eat, drink and be merry!" But God said to him: "You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Who then will get what you have gathered?" That is how it goes with the one who stores up treasures for themselves but is not rich toward God.

Luke 12,13-21

13Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."
14But he said to him, "Man, who appointed me judge or arbitrator over you?"
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ἄνθρωπε, τίς με κατέστησεν ⸀κριτὴν ἢ μεριστὴν ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς;
15Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on guard against every kind of greed, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions."
16And he told them a parable: "There was a rich man whose land produced an abundant harvest.
17He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have nowhere to store my crops.'
καὶ διελογίζετο ἐν ⸀ἑαυτῷ λέγων· Τί ποιήσω, ὅτι οὐκ ἔχω ποῦ συνάξω τοὺς καρπούς μου;
18Then he said, 'This is what I will do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.
19And I will say to my soul: Soul, you have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take it easy; eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.'
20But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded of you. And the things you have prepared—who will get them?'
εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ θεός· ⸀Ἄφρων, ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ τὴν ψυχήν σου ⸀ἀπαιτοῦσιν ἀπὸ σοῦ· ἃ δὲ ἡτοίμασας, τίνι ἔσται;
21So it is with anyone who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich toward God."
