The Watchman and the Sword
The word of the Lord came to Ezekiel: When the Lord brings a sword against a land, the people appoint a watchman who is to blow the trumpet and warn them. If anyone hears the sound of the trumpet but does not take warning, they must bear their own guilt when the sword takes them. But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, then the Lord will require the blood of the slain from the watchman's hand. Thus the Lord has appointed Ezekiel as a watchman for the house of Israel: When he hears a word from God's mouth, he is to warn the wicked concerning their way. If he remains silent, the Lord will require his blood; if he warns them, he has saved himself Ezekiel 33:1-9.
Ezekiel 33,1-9
1The word of the LORD came to me:
וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃
2Son of man, speak to your people and say to them: When I bring the sword against a land, and the people of that land choose one of their own and make him their watchman,
בֶּן־אָדָ֗ם דַּבֵּ֤ר אֶל־בְּנֵֽי־עַמְּךָ֙ וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם אֶ֕רֶץ כִּֽי־אָבִ֥יא עָלֶ֖יהָ חָ֑רֶב וְלָקְח֨וּ עַם־הָאָ֜רֶץ אִ֤ישׁ אֶחָד֙ מִקְצֵיהֶ֔ם וְנָתְנ֥וּ אֹת֛וֹ לָהֶ֖ם לְצֹפֶֽה׃
3and he sees the sword coming against the land and blows the trumpet to warn the people,
וְרָאָ֥ה אֶת־הַחֶ֖רֶב בָּאָ֣ה עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ וְתָקַ֥ע בַּשּׁוֹפָ֖ר וְהִזְהִ֥יר אֶת־הָעָֽם׃
4then if anyone hears the sound of the trumpet and does not heed the warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood is on his own head.
וְשָׁמַ֨ע הַשֹּׁמֵ֜עַ אֶת־ק֤וֹל הַשּׁוֹפָר֙ וְלֹ֣א נִזְהָ֔ר וַתָּ֥בוֹא חֶ֖רֶב וַתִּקָּחֵ֑הוּ דָּמ֥וֹ בְרֹאשׁ֖וֹ יִֽהְיֶֽה׃
5He heard the sound of the trumpet and paid no attention; his blood is on himself. Had he taken warning, he would have saved his life.
אֵת֩ ק֨וֹל הַשּׁוֹפָ֤ר שָׁמַע֙ וְלֹ֣א נִזְהָ֔ר דָּמ֖וֹ בּ֣וֹ יִֽהְיֶ֑ה וְה֥וּא נִזְהָ֖ר נַפְשׁ֥וֹ מִלֵּֽט׃
6But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes one of them away, that man is taken away in his own guilt, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.
וְ֠הַצֹּפֶה כִּֽי־יִרְאֶ֨ה אֶת־הַחֶ֜רֶב בָּאָ֗ה וְלֹֽא־תָקַ֤ע בַּשּׁוֹפָר֙ וְהָעָ֣ם לֹֽא־נִזְהָ֔ר וַתָּב֣וֹא חֶ֔רֶב וַתִּקַּ֥ח מֵהֶ֖ם נָ֑פֶשׁ ה֚וּא בַּעֲוֺנ֣וֹ נִלְקָ֔ח וְדָמ֖וֹ מִיַּֽד־הַצֹּפֶ֥ה אֶדְרֹֽשׁ׃ ס
7And you, son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall warn them from me.
וְאַתָּ֣ה בֶן־אָדָ֔ם צֹפֶ֥ה נְתַתִּ֖יךָ לְבֵ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְשָׁמַעְתָּ֤ מִפִּי֙ דָּבָ֔ר וְהִזְהַרְתָּ֥ אֹתָ֖ם מִמֶּֽנִּי׃
8If I say to the wicked, "You wicked one, you shall surely die," and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, that wicked man will die in his guilt, but I will hold you accountable for his blood.
בְּאָמְרִ֣י לָרָשָׁ֗ע רָשָׁע֙ מ֣וֹת תָּמ֔וּת וְלֹ֣א דִבַּ֔רְתָּ לְהַזְהִ֥יר רָשָׁ֖ע מִדַּרְכּ֑וֹ ה֤וּא רָשָׁע֙ בַּעֲוֺנ֣וֹ יָמ֔וּת וְדָמ֖וֹ מִיָּדְךָ֥ אֲבַקֵּֽשׁ׃
9But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from it, he will die in his guilt, but you will have saved your life.
וְ֠אַתָּה כִּֽי־הִזְהַ֨רְתָּ רָשָׁ֤ע מִדַּרְכּוֹ֙ לָשׁ֣וּב מִמֶּ֔נָּה וְלֹא־שָׁ֖ב מִדַּרְכּ֑וֹ ה֚וּא בַּעֲוֺנ֣וֹ יָמ֔וּת וְאַתָּ֖ה נַפְשְׁךָ֥ הִצַּֽלְתָּ׃ ס
