Distinctive features
- Not a translation but the Hebrew source itself: the Masoretic Text, the authoritative Hebrew and Aramaic text of the Tanakh in rabbinic Judaism.
- The Masoretes — scribal schools at work between the seventh and eleventh centuries — added vowel points, pronunciation marks and accents to the consonants, and counted letters, words and verses in the margins as a check on copying.
- The Old Testament only — and the Dead Sea Scrolls show this was not the sole Hebrew text in circulation at the end of the Second Temple period.
