Abijah succeeded his father Rehoboam as the second king of Judah after the division of the united kingdom, and ruled for three years from Jerusalem. Son of Rehoboam and Maacah, he appears as a complex figure in the biblical sources. The Books of Chronicles depict his powerful defense speech for the Davidic dynasty and the legitimate temple service, delivered from Mount Zemaraim before a decisive battle against Jeroboam and the Northern Kingdom. Despite being heavily outnumbered, he won a convincing military victory and captured strategically important cities, including the cult center Bethel. The Books of Kings, however, paint a darker picture and state that his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord. Abijah is said to have taken fourteen wives and fathered twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters, which testifies to dynastic strength despite his short reign. His son Asa succeeded him on the throne.
Before the decisive battle, Abijah delivered a powerful exhortation from Mount Zemaraim in the hill country of Ephraim. He defended the legitimacy of the Davidic dynasty and the lawful worship in Jerusalem, accusing Jeroboam of apostasy for setting up golden calves and dismissing the Levitical priests.
7Worthless men, scoundrels, gathered around him and defied Rehoboam son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and irresolute and could not stand up to them.
8And now you intend to stand up against the kingdom of the LORD, which is in the hands of David's sons. You are a vast horde, and you have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made for you as gods.
9Have you not driven out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made your own priests, like the peoples of other lands? Anyone who comes to be ordained with a young bull and seven rams becomes a priest of what are not gods at all.
10But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him. The priests who serve the LORD are the sons of Aaron, and the Levites do their appointed work.
11Morning after morning and evening after evening they offer burnt offerings and fragrant incense to the LORD; they set out the rows of bread on the pure table and tend the lamps of the golden lampstand every evening. We keep the charge of the LORD our God, but you have forsaken him.
12See, God himself is with us at our head, and his priests with their trumpets are ready to sound the battle cry against you. Men of Israel, do not fight against the LORD, the God of your fathers, for you cannot succeed."
Despite Jeroboam's army of 800,000 men being twice as large as Abijah's 400,000, Judah prevailed because they relied on the Lord. According to Chronicles, 500,000 chosen men of Israel fell in this battle.
3Abijah went into battle with an army of seasoned warriors, four hundred thousand chosen men, while Jeroboam drew up his lines against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, mighty warriors.
After the military victory, Abijah captured several cities from Jeroboam, including Bethel, Jeshanah, and Ephron with their surrounding villages. The capture of Bethel was symbolically significant as it was one of Jeroboam's two cult centers with golden calves.
Abijah consolidated his power, took fourteen wives, and had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters. This demonstrates his dynastic strength during his short reign.
