Solomon
The Wisest King
Also known as: Jedidiah, Shlomo, Solomon
Solomon was David's son and the third king of Israel. He is known for his wisdom, wealth, and the building of the temple in Jerusalem. He wrote Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs, but his many foreign wives led him away from God.

Anointed as king
David appointed Solomon as his successor, and he was anointed king.
32King David said, "Call in Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada." When they came before the king,
33he said to them, "Take your lord's servants with you, set my son Solomon on my own mule, and escort him down to Gihon.
34There Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet are to anoint him king over Israel. Then blow the trumpet and shout, 'Long live King Solomon!'
39Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon. Then they sounded the trumpet, and all the people shouted, "Long live King Solomon!"
Asked for wisdom
God revealed himself to Solomon, and he asked for wisdom rather than riches.
5At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, "Ask what I should give you."
7And now, LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David, but I am only a young man; I do not know how to go out or come in.
9So give your servant a listening heart to judge your people, to discern between good and evil—for who is able to judge this great people of yours?"
10It pleased the LORD that Solomon had asked for this.
11God said to him, "Because you have asked for this and have not asked for long life for yourself, or riches, or the death of your enemies, but have asked for discernment to hear a case rightly,
12I now do as you have asked. I give you a heart so wise and discerning that no one like you has ever lived before you, and no one like you will arise after you.
13I also give you what you did not ask for: both riches and honor, so that among kings there will be no one like you all your days.
The wise judgment
Solomon judged between two women who both claimed the same child.
24So the king said, "Bring me a sword." And they brought a sword before the king.
25Then the king ordered, "Cut the living child in two, and give half to one and half to the other."
26But the woman whose son was alive was moved with deep compassion for her son and said to the king, "Please, my lord, give her the living child—only do not kill him!" The other said, "He shall be neither mine nor yours. Cut him in two!"
27Then the king gave his ruling: "Give the living child to her; do not kill him. She is his mother."
28When all Israel heard the verdict the king had given, they stood in awe of him, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to administer justice.
Built the temple
Solomon built the Lord's temple in Jerusalem over seven years.
1In the four hundred and eightieth year after the Israelites came out of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, which is the second month, he began to build the house of the LORD.
11Then the word of the LORD came to Solomon:
12"Concerning this house you are building: if you walk in my statutes and carry out my judgments and keep all my commandments by walking in them, then I will establish with you the word I spoke to David your father.
13I will dwell among the Israelites, and I will not forsake my people Israel."
14So Solomon built the house and finished it.
38And in the eleventh year, in the month of Bul—that is, the eighth month—the house was finished, down to every detail and every specification. So he built it in seven years.
10When the priests came out of the Holy Place, the cloud filled the house of the LORD,
11and the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD.
Visit of the Queen of Sheba
The queen of Sheba came to hear Solomon's wisdom and see his riches.
1When the queen of Sheba heard how famous Solomon was—a fame bound up with the name of the LORD—she came to test him with hard questions.
2She arrived in Jerusalem with a very large retinue—camels loaded with spices, a great quantity of gold, and precious stones. She came to Solomon and spoke with him about everything that was on her mind,
3and Solomon answered all her questions. Nothing was too obscure for the king to explain to her.
4When the queen of Sheba had seen all of Solomon's wisdom, and the palace he had built,
5the food on his table, the seating of his officials, the attending servants in their robes, his cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he presented at the house of the LORD, it left her breathless.
6She said to the king, "The report I heard in my own country about your accomplishments and your wisdom was true."
7"But I did not believe it until I came and saw it with my own eyes. And in fact, I was not told the half of it! Your wisdom and your prosperity go far beyond the report I heard."
Apostasy from God
Solomon's many foreign wives turned his heart away from God.
1King Solomon loved many foreign women. Besides Pharaoh's daughter, there were Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites—
3He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned his heart away.
4So it was that when Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was no longer wholly true to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been.
6Solomon did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD; he did not follow the LORD wholeheartedly, as David his father had done.
9The LORD grew angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice
11So the LORD said to Solomon, "Since this has been your way, and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant.
