Ahaziah belonged to the Omride dynasty and ascended the throne of the northern kingdom after his father Ahab, but his reign from Samaria lasted only two years. Raised under the influence of Queen Jezebel and Baal worship's hold on the court, he continued his parents' religious apostasy. Politically, his rule was marked by decline: Moab broke away from Israelite dominance without Ahaziah being able to intervene. When he suffered a serious injury after falling through the lattice in his upper room in Samaria, he chose to send messengers to Baal-Zebub, the Philistine god of Ekron, to learn whether he would recover—a choice that revealed his deep distrust of Yahweh. The prophet Elijah intervened by God's command and met the messengers with an unyielding judgment: the king would never leave his sickbed. When Ahaziah sent soldiers to bring the prophet, the first two groups were consumed by fire from heaven, while the third was spared after their captain fell on his knees and pleaded for mercy. Elijah then delivered the judgment personally to the king. Ahaziah died without an heir, and the throne passed to his brother Joram—a dynastic shift that signaled the imminent downfall of the Omride house.
Ahaziah did what was evil in the Lord's sight, walking in the way of his father and mother, and in the way of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin. He served Baal and worshiped him, provoking the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel.

Ahaziah fell through the lattice in his upper room in Samaria and became seriously ill. He sent messengers to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, asking if he would recover.
2Ahaziah fell through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and was injured. So he sent messengers with these orders: "Go and inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I will recover from this illness."
The Lord's angel sent the prophet Elijah to meet Ahaziah's messengers with the message that the king would die because he sought Baal-Zebub instead of the God of Israel. The king sent three groups of fifty soldiers each to bring Elijah. Over the first two groups, Elijah called down fire from heaven. The leader of the third group fell on his knees and begged for their lives to be spared, and they were saved. Elijah went with them and delivered the judgment directly to the king.
3But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, "Get up and go to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and ask them: 'Is there no God in Israel, that you are going to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?'
6They answered, "A man came up to meet us and said, 'Go back to the king who sent you and tell him: This is what the LORD says: Is there no God in Israel, that you are sending men to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not get up from the bed you are lying on. You will surely die.'"
9Then he sent a captain with his fifty men to Elijah. The captain went up to him, and there he was, sitting on top of the mountain, and he said, "Man of God, the king commands you: Come down!"
10Elijah answered the captain, "If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!" Then fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty men.

13So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. This third captain went up, fell on his knees before Elijah, and pleaded with him: "Man of God, please let my life and the lives of these fifty servants of yours be precious in your sight.
16He said to the king, "This is what the LORD says: Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron—is there no God in Israel whose word you might seek?—therefore you will not get up from the bed you are lying on. You will surely die."
17So he died, according to the word of the LORD that Elijah had spoken. Since he had no son, Joram succeeded him as king in the second year of Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah.
