The people of Jerusalem made Ahaziah, Jehoram's youngest son, king in his place, since the raiding band that came with the Arabs against the camp had killed all the older sons. So Ahaziah son of Jehoram became king of Judah.

Ahaziah was forty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Athaliah, granddaughter of Omri. [Footnote: The parallel account and some ancient witnesses read twenty-two years old.]

He too walked in the ways of the house of Ahab, for his mother was his counselor in doing wrong.

He did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD, as the house of Ahab had done, for after his father's death they were his advisers, to his ruin.

He followed their counsel and went with Joram son of Ahab, king of Israel, to make war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth-gilead, and the Arameans wounded Joram.

So he returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds they had inflicted on him at Ramah when he fought against Hazael king of Aram. And Ahaziah son of Jehoram, king of Judah, went down to Jezreel to visit Joram son of Ahab, because he was ill.

Ahaziah's downfall came from God through this visit to Joram. For when he arrived, he went out with Jehoram to meet Jehu son of Nimshi, whom the LORD had anointed to cut off the house of Ahab.

While Jehu was executing judgment on the house of Ahab, he came upon the officials of Judah and the sons of Ahaziah's brothers, who served Ahaziah, and he killed them.

Then he searched for Ahaziah, and they captured him while he was hiding in Samaria. They brought him to Jehu and put him to death, but they buried him, for they said, "He is the grandson of Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart." And the house of Ahaziah had no one strong enough to hold the kingdom.

When Athaliah, Ahaziah's mother, saw that her son was dead, she set about destroying the whole royal line of the house of Judah.

But Jehoshabeath, the king's daughter, took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the king's sons who were being put to death, and she put him and his nurse in a bedroom. So Jehoshabeath, daughter of King Jehoram and wife of Jehoiada the priest—she was Ahaziah's sister—hid him from Athaliah, and Athaliah did not put him to death.

He remained hidden with them in the house of God for six years, while Athaliah ruled the land.

People

Ahaziah (אֲחַזְיָהוּ) became king of Judah under dramatic circumstances, after all his older brothers had been killed by Arab raiders (v. 1). His age at the time he began to reign is given as forty-two years in this chapter, while 2 Kings 8:26 states twenty-two years (בֶּן־עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁתַּיִם שָׁנָה) – likely a scribal error in the Hebrew text, since twenty-two years makes more sense chronologically. He reigned for only one year (around 841 B.C.). Notably, verse 6 uses the name form "Azariah" (עֲזַרְיָהוּ) instead of Ahaziah – a known textual variant.

Athaliah (עֲתַלְיָהוּ) was Ahaziah’s mother and is described as "daughter of Omri" (v. 2), which probably means descendant rather than direct daughter – she was likely the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel. She acted as Ahaziah’s advisor "to act wickedly" (v. 3) and represents the influence of the Baal cult in Judah through the marital alliance with Israel’s royal house.

Jehu son of Nimshi is referred to as the one whom the Lord anointed "to destroy the house of Ahab" (v. 7). He is historically confirmed by the famous "Black Obelisk" of the Assyrian king Shalmaneser III (around 841 B.C.), which depicts Jehu or his envoy in a posture of submission.

Jehoshabeath (יְהוֹשַׁבְעַת) is uniquely identified in Chronicles as the wife of the priest Jehoiada (v. 11) – a detail not found in 2 Kings (where she is called Jehosheba/יְהוֹשֶׁבַע). This explains how she had access to hide Joash in the temple.

Places

Ramoth-Gilead (רָמֹת גִּלְעָד) was a strategically important city in Transjordan that was often disputed between Israel/Judah and the Arameans. The site lay on a major trade route and was vital for control of the region. It was here that the battle against Hazael of Aram took place (v. 5).

Jezreel (יִזְרְעֶאל) served as the winter residence for kings of the Omride dynasty, located in the fertile Jezreel Valley. King Joram of Israel went there to be healed after being wounded in battle (v. 6). It was in Jezreel that Jehu’s revolution and purge of Ahab’s house occurred.

Samaria is mentioned as the place where Ahaziah was found while hiding (v. 9), which differs from the account in 2 Kings 9:27. This shows either an alternative tradition or that Ahaziah fled northward before being overtaken.

Events and Customs

The expression "from God came Ahaziah’s downfall" (וּמֵֽאֱלֹהִ֗ים הָיְתָה֙ תְּבוּסַ֣ת אֲחַזְיָ֔הוּ, v. 7) reflects Chronicles’ theological interpretation of history: Ahaziah’s fate was divinely determined because of his connection to Ahab’s sinful house. This is typical of Chronicles’ doctrine of retribution.

Athaliah’s massacre of "the entire royal family" (v. 10) was a horrifying attempt to secure her own power. In the ancient Near East, it was not uncommon for usurpers to eliminate all potential rivals, but for a queen mother to kill her own grandchildren for power was extraordinary and marked a moral low point.

Key Terms

The word תְּבוּסָה (tevusah, "downfall" or "destruction", v. 7) is rarely used in the Old Testament and denotes a fateful destruction. The Chronicler emphasizes that this was divine judgment, not chance.
