Barjesus, a Jewish sorcerer and false prophet, was in the retinue of the Roman proconsul Sergius Paulus on Cyprus when Paul and Barnabas arrived on the island during their first missionary journey.

6They traveled through the whole island as far as Paphos, where they found a Jewish magician and false prophet named Bar-Jesus,
7who was with the proconsul Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. The proconsul sent for Barnabas and Saul, eager to hear the word of God.

Barjesus Opposes the Gospel

Barjesus, also called Elymas (the sorcerer), opposed Paul and Barnabas and tried to turn the proconsul away from the faith.

8But Elymas the magician—for that is what his name means—opposed them, trying to turn the proconsul away from the faith.

Paul Rebukes Elymas

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Paul turned to Elymas and called him a son of the devil, full of all kinds of deceit and wickedness, an enemy of all righteousness who did not stop twisting the Lord's straight paths.

9Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at him
10and said, "You are full of every kind of deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all that is right! Will you never stop twisting the straight paths of the Lord?
εἶπεν· Ὦ πλήρης παντὸς δόλου καὶ πάσης ῥᾳδιουργίας, υἱὲ διαβόλου, ἐχθρὲ πάσης δικαιοσύνης, οὐ παύσῃ διαστρέφων τὰς ⸀ὁδοὺς κυρίου τὰς εὐθείας;

Elymas is struck blind

Paul declared that the Lord's hand was upon Elymas, and that he would be blind and unable to see the sun for a time. Immediately darkness and gloom fell over him, and he went about seeking someone to lead him by the hand.

11Now look, the hand of the Lord is against you. You will be blind, unable to see the sun, for a time." Immediately a mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, looking for someone to lead him by the hand.

Sergius Paulus comes to faith

When the proconsul saw what had happened, he came to believe, for he was amazed at the Lord's teaching.

12When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, astounded at the teaching of the Lord.
