Hophra

Pharaoh of Egypt

Also known as: Apries, Wahibre

The exileKingc. 589–570 BC

Hophra (also known as Apries) was a pharaoh of Egypt from the 26th dynasty who reigned during the period around the fall of Jerusalem. He attempted to help Judah against Babylon but failed. The prophet Jeremiah prophesied that God would deliver Hophra into the hands of his enemies, just as he had delivered Zedekiah to Nebuchadnezzar.

Key events

Hophra's failed aid to Judah

Pharaoh Hophra sent an army from Egypt to help Jerusalem against the Babylonian siege, but the Egyptian army withdrew without achieving any lasting result.

5Meanwhile Pharaoh's army had marched out of Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report of it, they withdrew from Jerusalem.
6Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet:
7This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of me: Pharaoh's army, which marched out to help you, is going back to its own land, to Egypt.
8The Chaldeans will return and attack this city; they will capture it and burn it down.
9This is what the LORD says: Do not deceive yourselves, thinking, "The Chaldeans will surely leave us." They will not leave.
10Even if you struck down the whole Chaldean army that is fighting against you, and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would rise up and burn this city down.
11When the Chaldean army had withdrawn from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh's army,

Jeremiah's prophecy against Hophra

The prophet Jeremiah prophesied that God would deliver Pharaoh Hophra into the hands of his enemies, just as he had delivered Zedekiah, king of Judah, to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon.

30This is what the LORD says: I am going to hand Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt over to his enemies, to those who seek his life, just as I handed Zedekiah king of Judah over to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, his enemy who sought his life.

Ezekiel's prophecy against Egypt's pharaoh

The prophet Ezekiel proclaimed God's judgment on Egypt's pharaoh and his power, as part of God's punishment of Egypt for their pride and false promises of help.

1In the tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
2Son of man, set your face against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and prophesy against him and against all of Egypt.
3Speak and say: Thus says the Lord GOD: Look, I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt, you great monster sprawling in the midst of your channels, who says, "The Nile is mine; I made it for myself."
4I will put hooks in your jaws and make the fish of your channels cling to your scales. I will haul you up out of your channels with all the fish of your channels clinging to your scales.
5I will fling you out into the wilderness, you and all the fish of your channels. You will fall on the open field and not be gathered or picked up. I give you as food to the beasts of the earth and the birds of the sky.
6Then all who live in Egypt will know that I am the LORD, because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel.
7When they grasped you in their hand, you splintered and tore up their shoulders; when they leaned on you, you broke and left their backs wrenched.

Egypt's fall prophesied by Ezekiel

Ezekiel prophesied that Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, would be given Egypt as payment for his service against Tyre, and that Egypt's wealth would be plundered.

17In the twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
18Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has made his army labor hard against Tyre. Every head was rubbed bare and every shoulder chafed raw, yet neither he nor his army got any wages from Tyre for the labor he expended against it.
19Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: I am giving the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. He will carry off her wealth, seize her spoil, and take her plunder; that will be the wages for his army.
20As the payment for his labor, I have given him the land of Egypt, because they worked for me, declares the Lord GOD.

God's judgment on Egypt and its allies

Ezekiel proclaimed that the day of the Lord was near for Egypt, and that God would break Egypt's power and scatter its people among the nations.

20In the eleventh year, in the first month, on the seventh day, the word of the LORD came to me:
21Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt. It has not been bound up for healing or wrapped in a bandage to make it strong enough to grasp a sword.
22Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt. I will break both his arms, the strong one and the one already broken, and I will make the sword fall from his hand.
23I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them through the lands.
24I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and put my sword in his hand, but I will break the arms of Pharaoh, and Pharaoh will groan before him like a man mortally wounded.
25I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh will fall. Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I put my sword in the hand of the king of Babylon and he stretches it out against the land of Egypt.
26I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them through the lands. Then they will know that I am the LORD.
