King Zedekiah's Envoy
Also known as: Jukal
Jehukal (also called Jucal) was the son of Shelemiah and one of the officials at King Zedekiah's court in Judah. He was sent by the king to ask the prophet Jeremiah to pray for the people, but later he was among the princes who demanded Jeremiah's death because the prophet's message was considered demoralizing for the defense of Jerusalem.

Sent as a Messenger to Jeremiah
King Zedekiah sent Jehukal (Jucal) along with the priest Shephatiah to the prophet Jeremiah to ask him to pray to the Lord for the people under the Babylonian threat.
3Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah son of Maaseiah the priest to Jeremiah the prophet with this message: "Please pray for us to the LORD our God."
וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ צִדְקִיָּ֜הוּ אֶת־יְהוּכַ֣ל בֶּן־שֶֽׁלֶמְיָ֗ה וְאֶת־צְפַנְיָ֤הוּ בֶן־מַֽעֲשֵׂיָה֙ הַכֹּהֵ֔ן אֶל־יִרְמְיָ֥הוּ הַנָּבִ֖יא לֵאמֹ֑ר הִתְפַּלֶּל־נָ֣א בַעֲדֵ֔נוּ אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃
Demanded Jeremiah's Death
Jehukal was among the princes who heard Jeremiah's prophecies that Jerusalem would fall to the Babylonians, and they demanded that the king put the prophet to death because his words weakened morale among the soldiers and the people.
1Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malchiah heard the words Jeremiah was speaking to all the people:
וַיִּשְׁמַ֞ע שְׁפַטְיָ֣ה בֶן־מַתָּ֗ן וּגְדַלְיָ֙הוּ֙ בֶּן־פַּשְׁח֔וּר וְיוּכַל֙ בֶּן־שֶׁ֣לֶמְיָ֔הוּ וּפַשְׁח֖וּר בֶּן־מַלְכִּיָּ֑ה אֶ֨ת־הַדְּבָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֧ר יִרְמְיָ֛הוּ מְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־כָּל־הָעָ֖ם לֵאמֹֽר׃ ס
2"This is what the LORD says: Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, by famine, or by plague, but whoever goes out to the Chaldeans will live; he will escape with his life and survive.
כֹּה֮ אָמַ֣ר יְהוָה֒ הַיֹּשֵׁב֙ בָּעִ֣יר הַזֹּ֔את יָמ֕וּת בַּחֶ֖רֶב בָּרָעָ֣ב וּבַדָּ֑בֶר וְהַיֹּצֵ֤א אֶל־הַכַּשְׂדִּים֙ *יחיה **וְחָיָ֔ה וְהָיְתָה־לּ֥וֹ נַפְשׁ֛וֹ לְשָׁלָ֖ל וָחָֽי׃ ס
3This is what the LORD says: This city will surely be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it."
כֹּ֖ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֑ה הִנָּתֹ֨ן תִּנָּתֵ֜ן הָעִ֣יר הַזֹּ֗את בְּיַ֛ד חֵ֥יל מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֖ל וּלְכָדָֽהּ׃
4So the officials said to the king, "This man must be put to death. By speaking such words to them he is undermining the courage of the soldiers who are left in this city and of all the people. This man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but their ruin."
וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ הַשָּׂרִ֜ים אֶל־הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ י֣וּמַת נָא֮ אֶת־הָאִ֣ישׁ הַזֶּה֒ כִּֽי־עַל־כֵּ֡ן הֽוּא־מְרַפֵּ֡א אֶת־יְדֵי֩ אַנְשֵׁ֨י הַמִּלְחָמָ֜ה הַֽנִּשְׁאָרִ֣ים ׀ בָּעִ֣יר הַזֹּ֗את וְאֵת֙ יְדֵ֣י כָל־הָעָ֔ם לְדַבֵּ֣ר אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם כַּדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה כִּ֣י ׀ הָאִ֣ישׁ הַזֶּ֗ה אֵינֶ֨נּוּ דֹרֵ֧שׁ לְשָׁל֛וֹם לָעָ֥ם הַזֶּ֖ה כִּ֥י אִם־לְרָעָֽה׃
Jeremiah Thrown into the Cistern
As a result of the demands from Jehucal and the other princes, Jeremiah was thrown into Malkijah's cistern where he sank into the mud, in an attempt to silence him.
5King Zedekiah answered, "He is in your hands; the king can do nothing to stop you."
וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ צִדְקִיָּ֔הוּ הִנֵּה־ה֖וּא בְּיֶדְכֶ֑ם כִּֽי־אֵ֣ין הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ יוּכַ֥ל אֶתְכֶ֖ם דָּבָֽר׃
6So they took Jeremiah and threw him into the cistern of Malchiah the king's son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah by ropes. There was no water in the cistern, only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud.
וַיִּקְח֣וּ אֶֽת־יִרְמְיָ֗הוּ וַיַּשְׁלִ֨כוּ אֹת֜וֹ אֶל־הַבּ֣וֹר ׀ מַלְכִּיָּ֣הוּ בֶן־הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ אֲשֶׁר֙ בַּחֲצַ֣ר הַמַּטָּרָ֔ה וַיְשַׁלְּח֥וּ אֶֽת־יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ בַּחֲבָלִ֑ים וּבַבּ֤וֹר אֵֽין־מַ֙יִם֙ כִּ֣י אִם־טִ֔יט וַיִּטְבַּ֥ע יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ בַּטִּֽיט׃ ס
Archaeological confirmation – the bulla discovery
In 2005, a seal impression (bulla) was found in excavations at the City of David in Jerusalem with the inscription "belonging to Jehucal son of Shelemijah son of Shobi," confirming the historical existence of this biblical figure.
3Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah son of Maaseiah the priest to Jeremiah the prophet with this message: "Please pray for us to the LORD our God."

The conflict between the princes and Jeremiah
Jehucal represented the political faction at court that opposed Jeremiah's message of submission to Babylon. This conflict illustrates the tension between political power and prophetic authority in Judah's final days.
