Moses' Faithful Mother

Jochebed was a Levite woman who showed extraordinary courage and faith by hiding her son Moses for three months to protect him from Pharaoh's death decree against Hebrew baby boys. She placed him in a basket on the Nile, which led to his being found and adopted by Pharaoh's daughter. Her faith is counted among the great examples of faith in the Bible.

Hiding Moses for Three Months

When Jochebed saw that Moses was a beautiful child, she hid him for three months to save him from Pharaoh's command to kill all Hebrew baby boys.

Placing Moses in a Basket on the Nile

When she could no longer hide him, she made a basket of papyrus, sealed it with tar and pitch, placed the child inside, and set the basket among the reeds by the bank of the Nile.

3When she could hide him no longer, she got a basket of papyrus, coated it with tar and pitch, laid the child in it, and set it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.
וְלֹא־יָכְלָ֣ה עוֹד֮ הַצְּפִינוֹ֒ וַתִּֽקַּֽח־לוֹ֙ תֵּ֣בַת גֹּ֔מֶא וַתַּחְמְרָ֥ה בַחֵמָ֖ר וּבַזָּ֑פֶת וַתָּ֤שֶׂם בָּהּ֙ אֶת־הַיֶּ֔לֶד וַתָּ֥שֶׂם בַּסּ֖וּף עַל־שְׂפַ֥ת הַיְאֹֽר׃ ‬

Becomes Moses' Nurse

Through Miriam's wise suggestion, Jochebed was hired by Pharaoh's daughter as a nurse for her own child and even received payment to raise him.

7Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and find you a Hebrew woman to nurse the child for you?"
וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֲחֹתוֹ֮ אֶל־בַּת־פַּרְעֹה֒ הַאֵלֵ֗ךְ וְקָרָ֤אתִי לָךְ֙ אִשָּׁ֣ה מֵינֶ֔קֶת מִ֖ן הָעִבְרִיֹּ֑ת וְתֵינִ֥ק לָ֖ךְ אֶת־הַיָּֽלֶד׃ ‬
8"Yes, go," said Pharaoh's daughter. So the girl went and called the child's mother.
וַתֹּֽאמֶר־לָ֥הּ בַּת־פַּרְעֹ֖ה לֵ֑כִי וַתֵּ֙לֶךְ֙ הָֽעַלְמָ֔ה וַתִּקְרָ֖א אֶת־אֵ֥ם הַיָּֽלֶד׃ ‬
9Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this child and nurse him for me, and I will pay your wages." So the woman took the child and nursed him.
וַתֹּ֧אמֶר לָ֣הּ בַּת־פַּרְעֹ֗ה הֵילִ֜יכִי אֶת־הַיֶּ֤לֶד הַזֶּה֙ וְהֵינִקִ֣הוּ לִ֔י וַאֲנִ֖י אֶתֵּ֣ן אֶת־שְׂכָרֵ֑ךְ וַתִּקַּ֧ח הָאִשָּׁ֛ה הַיֶּ֖לֶד וַתְּנִיקֵֽהוּ׃ ‬

Mentioned in the Lineage of Levi

Jochebed is mentioned as Amram's wife and as the mother of Aaron and Moses. She was the daughter of Levi, born in Egypt.

59The name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, a daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam.

Her Faith Honored in Hebrews

The faith of Moses' parents is highlighted in Hebrews, where it says that by faith they hid Moses for three months because they saw he was a beautiful child and were not afraid of the king's command.

23By faith Moses' parents hid him for three months after he was born, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king's edict.
