The last king of Israel from Jehu's dynasty
Zechariah was the son of Jeroboam II and the last king of Jehu's dynasty in the northern kingdom of Israel. He reigned for only six months before he was murdered by Shallum in a conspiracy. With his death, the Lord's promise to Jehu was fulfilled that his descendants would sit on Israel's throne until the fourth generation.

Zechariah became king over Israel in the thirty-eighth year of King Azariah's reign in Judah. He reigned in Samaria for six months.

Zechariah did what was evil in the Lord's sight, as his fathers had done. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which had caused Israel to sin.
Shallum's conspiracy and murder
Shallum son of Jabesh conspired against Zechariah and struck him down in public view. Then Shallum seized the kingship.
Fulfillment of the Lord's Promise to Jehu
The death of Zechariah fulfilled the word of the Lord to Jehu that his descendants would sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation. Zechariah was the fourth generation after Jehu.
