Shallum was the son of Jabesh and became Israel's sixteenth king. He murdered King Zechariah and seized the throne, but reigned for only one month before being killed by Menahem, who then became king.

His reign was extremely short—just one month—making him one of the most short-lived kings in Israel's history.

13Shallum son of Jabesh became king in the thirty-ninth year of Uzziah king of Judah, and he reigned a full month in Samaria.
שַׁלּ֤וּם בֶּן־יָבֵישׁ֙ מָלַ֔ךְ בִּשְׁנַ֨ת שְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים וָתֵ֙שַׁע֙ שָׁנָ֔ה לְעֻזִיָּ֖ה מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה וַיִּמְלֹ֥ךְ יֶֽרַח־יָמִ֖ים בְּשֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃ ‬

Killed by Menahem

Menahem, son of Gadi, marched up from Tirzah to Samaria, struck Shallum down and took the throne from him.

14Then Menahem son of Gadi went up from Tirzah to Samaria, struck down Shallum son of Jabesh there, killed him, and became king in his place.
וַיַּעַל֩ מְנַחֵ֨ם בֶּן־גָּדִ֜י מִתִּרְצָ֗ה וַיָּבֹא֙ שֹׁמְר֔וֹן וַיַּ֛ךְ אֶת־שַׁלּ֥וּם בֶּן־יָבֵ֖ישׁ בְּשֹׁמְר֑וֹן וַיְמִיתֵ֖הוּ וַיִּמְלֹ֥ךְ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ ‬

Fulfillment of Prophecy

Shallum's brief reign and violent death were part of the fulfillment of the Lord's word to Jehu that his descendants would sit on Israel's throne for four generations.

12This fulfilled the word the LORD had spoken to Jehu: "Your descendants to the fourth generation will sit on the throne of Israel." And so it was.
